Por primera vez, el Parque Natural Regional Cerro Páramo de Miraflores del Huila, fue escenario para la liberación de un ejemplar de Águila Real de Montaña especie amenazada a nivel nacional.
Con cautela, pero con decisión y con la fuerza aguerrida que caracteriza al Águila Real de Montaña, ‘Yarei de Miraflores’, nombre que recibió de la comunidad que la rescató de la muerte, abrió sus alas en busca de libertad y de sus padres que la aguardaban sigilosos en lo más alto de las nubes. Esta ave por culpa de los cazadores había sido arrancada de su nido.
El ave rapaz fue encontrada el pasado 2 de septiembre por Willington Yáñez García, habitante de la zona rural del municipio de Garzón, en malas condiciones de salud, al parecer herida por impactos de perdigón, situación que fue corroborada por el equipo médico veterinario de la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Alto Magdalena CAM, que brindó los primeros auxilios en el Centro de Atención y Valoración Animal.
“Venía por el camino de la finca, donde la encontré en el suelo, miré que no podía volar, me la llevé para la casa para tratar de curarla, al ver que la situación era complicada decidimos entregarla a la CAM para que se hiciera cargo de ella”, señaló Willington Yáñez García.
Pero su mal estado de salud, CAM decidió trasladar al ave hasta el Centro de Rehabilitación de Aves Rapaces San Isidro de la Fundación Águila de Los Andes (FADA) en la ciudad de Pereira, principal centro de atención y estudio de estas especies a nivel nacional.
Allí durante 11 días permaneció bajo estricto cuidado veterinario. Los especialistas encontraron que el animal había sido impactado por seis perdigones, que aún permanecían en su cuerpo y que comprometían seriamente su ala derecha y su columna vertebral, motivo suficiente para impedir su vuelo y su supervivencia en un hábitat natural.
“Al parecer los tiros afectaron gran parte del ala derecha, lo que hizo que el águila perdiera las plumas primarias, razón por la cual realizamos una cirugía de implantación de plumas, una técnica que se desarrolla en el centro, donde contamos con un banco de plumas de varias especies de águilas”, señaló Andrés Felipe Quintero, médico veterinario de la Fundación Águilas de Los Andes.
REGRESÓ A SU HÁBITAT
Una vez el águila estuvo totalmente sanada y en condiciones aptas para su liberación, la CAM en conjunto con la Corporación Autónoma Regional de Risaralda-Carder y la Fada realizaron el protocolo necesario para su liberación, que consistía en su traslado hasta el sitio exacto donde había sido hallada.
De esa manera, en compañía de la familia Yáñez y comunidad de la zona, personal de la Autoridad Ambiental del Huila y profesionales de la Fundación Águila de Los Andes la trasladaron en un guacal hasta la remota serranía donde fue encontrada por Willington.
“Es de gran importancia liberarla en el mismo sitio donde fue hallada, debido a que es su hábitat natural y posiblemente sus padres la reconozcan y pueda continuar su ciclo de crecimiento de manera normal, ya que estudios realizados a la especie, han determinado que las águilas deben permanecer al lado de sus papás hasta que alcancen la edad juvenil, aproximadamente dos años”, indicó el veterinario Andrés Felipe Quintero.
Este individuo será monitoreado con un trasmisor especial que evaluará sus movimientos y grado de aislamiento o conexión con otras poblaciones, información muy útil considerando que es el águila que se encuentra en mayor riesgo de extinción en Colombia debido a la pérdida de hábitat y a la presión de la cacería.
IMPORTANCIA BIOLÓGICA
El águila real, es una rapaz local y rara en los Andes Colombianos; actualmente a nivel nacional tan sólo se tienen registros de cuatro nidos, de comprobarse la existencia de uno más en el Parque Natural Regional Páramos de Miraflores en el Huila, se convertiría en el quinto nido objeto de estudio.
Para ello, la CAM desde ya lidera un proceso para consolidar un grupo de monitoreo de aves rapaces comunitario en los municipios de Garzón, Gigante y Algeciras donde se localiza el parque natural, el cual abarca una extensión de 31.540 hectáreas.
“Desde la CAM queremos agradecer a la comunidad por su compromiso con esta zona. Vamos a trabajar de la mano de la comunidad y del equipo de Áreas Protegidas para realizar un diagnóstico que redunde en el beneficio de esta región que además brinda importantes servicios ecositémicos para el centro del departamento del Huila”, sostuvo Carlos Andrés González Torres, subdirector de Regulación y Calidad Ambienta de la CAM.
Esta especie está amenazada debido principalmente a la fragmentación y destrucción de su hábitat natural, de la cual se considera que ha perdido un 63% en el territorio nacional, así mismo la presión por cacería y su consecuente eliminación de individuos (adultos y juveniles), esta especie ha perdido más del 30% de su población en tres generaciones
“Es una especie amenazada y es muy importante depredador ‘tope’, ya que al protegerla a ella, se están protegiendo otras especies tanto animales como de árboles”, manifestó Edwin Campbell, biólogo de la de la Fundación Águila de Los Andes.
De acuerdo con los especialistas el hecho que habite en el Parque Natura Regional Cerro Páramo Miraflores, es un indicativo valioso, en la medida que establece el buen estado de conservación del área al ofrecer los servicios requeridos por la especie tanto en flora como en fauna para su alimento y necesidades en general.
“Uno de los principales propósitos de la Corporación dentro de su nuevo Plan de Acción es elevar a categoría de Parque Natural Nacional el área del Páramo Miraflores, trabajo que se articula con Parques Nacionales”, puntualizó González Torres.
