En nuestro país se dice que una persona fue víctima de «fleteo» cuando antisociales la asaltan para despojarla del dinero que, previamente, ha sacado de un banco. No cabe duda de que el uso equivocado del término se deriva de la ausencia de una consulta previa al diccionario.
Muchos de los vocablos que escuchamos y leemos a diario en los medios de comunicación colombianos suelen ser, o bien «creaciones extralingüísticas» de policías (y copiados por periodistas y locutores), o bien aplicaciones mal hechas de palabras usadas en otros países, sin el mismo significado en el nuestro. Los casos abundan. Pero esta vez me referiré a uno de ellos: fleteo. Este término lo emplean casi todos los días quienes trajinan con noticias policiales.

No cabe duda de que el uso equivocado del término se deriva de la ausencia de una consulta previa al diccionario. Si se hiciera así, seguramente no se emplearía mal esa palabra. Dicho de modo coloquial: no se estaría MFT (miccionando fuera de la taza).
Primero, entonces, leamos las definiciones de esa palabra:
De interés: Periodista: Escéptico bien informado
Fleteo: En cuba, acción de fletear, esto es, buscar clientes una prostituta. Ciertamente, nada de eso ocurre en los bancos colombianos. Allí los antisociales buscan víctimas para robarles su dinero, no buscan damiselas para pasar ratos de placer. Fíjese el lector que el diccionario no menciona a Colombia para darle una significación alguna a esa palabra. Es decir, aquí no significa ni lo que cree el pueblo, ni lo que la Policía acuñó deliberadamente como atraco.
Como fleteo procede del verbo fletear, de donde deviene flete, el mismo diccionario (útil orientador del léxico) dice que tal verbo, en Costa Rica y Nicaragua, significa «transportar carga de un lugar a otro».
Leer: Cambió forma en que las audiencias se informan
Una segunda acepción del verbo fletear señala que en Cuba significa, en referencia al oficio de una prostituta, «recorrer las calles en busca de clientes».
Ahora bien, precisemos lo que es un flete, según lo enseña el diccionario:
- Precio estipulado por el alquiler de una nave o de una parte de ella.
- Carga de un buque.
- En América: precio del alquiler de un medio de transporte.
- En América: carga que se transporta por mar o por tierra.
- En Argentina y Uruguay: caballo de montar de muy buenas cualidades.
- En Argentina y Uruguay: vehículo que, por alquiler, transporta bultos o mercancías.
- En Argentina: transporte de mercancías.
- En Costa Rica, Guatemala y Venezuela: valor del traslado de mercancías en un vehículo de transporte.
- En Cuba: cliente de una fletera (prostituta).

Si nos fijamos bien, nuestra más cercana aproximación territorial para aludir al uso del verbo fletear es Venezuela. De allí nos vino esa imprecisión. No hay que olvidar que, como se dice popularmente, en Venezuela hay muchos colombianos; sus conexiones con su país de origen hicieron que esa palabreja se colara en nuestro territorio, pero llegó distorsionada.
Luego en los medios de comunicación colombianos se insulta a las víctimas de los atracos perpetrados por los antisociales que las acechan al salir de los bancos: se las trata como mercancías. Eso no es justo, ni considerado.

Además de que los bandidos les quitan la plata, también policías y periodistas les quitan su dignidad de personas, pues resultan calificadas como «cosas» para transportar. Es decir, ¡las deshumanizan!
Uno cualquiera de los alegadores de siempre en estos asuntos dirá que esa es una metáfora. No es cierto. Primero porque tal figura se usa para engalanar una expresión, no para denigrar de nadie; segundo porque las metáforas tienen funcionalidad en literatura, no en las noticias cotidianas.

Si el lector se fijó bien en las definiciones para la palabra flete, la que corresponde al lenguaje venezolano se refiere al valor del traslado de mercancías «en un vehículo de transporte».
En Colombia, los atracadores no transportan a sus víctimas (a sus «mercancías», según aquellos periodistas) en vehículo alguno. Simplemente, les siguen el rastro y en el curso de su destino las despojan del botín.

Es recomendable, entonces, hablar sencillamente de asaltos, atracos, robos a mano armada o despojos a la fuerza, cuando de hacer referencia a las acciones de bandidos se trate. La sinonimia, que tanto servicio presta en el lenguaje cotidiano, les vendría muy bien a policías y periodistas en Colombia.
