Un Sismo de magnitud local de 5.4 con epicentro a 12 kilómetros al noreste del pico central del Nevado del Huila, a una profundidad de 9 kilómetros, se registró a las 7.32 horas del sábados 26 de enero de 2019, sobre territorio de Planadas, Tolima, señaló el Servicio Geológico Colombiano – SGC El fenómeno fue precedido por otro de magnitud 3.4 en el mismo sector, y seguido por más 711 réplicas, en algunos casos, con magnitudes superes a 3 grados que generaron, en el municipio de Paéz, daños en viviendas, vidrios rotos y caída de rocas.
El Sismo lo sintieron habitantes de Bogotá, amplia zona del altiplano cundiboyacense, Girardot, Neiva, La Plata, Mocoa, Armania, Pereira, Planadas, Gaitania, Cali, Palmira y Pradera.
Estos movimientos telúricos se localizan en el área de influencia del volcán Nevado del Huila, zona tectónica activa, donde se han registrado otros similares como el de enero de 2014 de 5.2 grados, y julio de 2018 con 4.5 grados, pero no debajo del edificio volcánico y sin modificar otros parámetros del monitorio volcánico, por lo que se mantiene el nivel III, señala el S.G.C.
EN EL HUILA
La coordinadora de la Oficina para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres, Isabel Hernández Ávila, informó que hubo afectaciones en la vereda Gualpí, de Teruel, donde una vivienda deshabitada y en avanzado estado deterioro colapsó.
En el casco urbano, un local de un supermercado de cadena presentó agrietamiento de paredes; en Yaguará se desplomó el techo de la estación de bomberos voluntarios.En el sitio Pericongo, en la vía nacional Neiva-Pitalito, donde existe riesgo permanente por caída de roca, no se reportó ni se evidencian posibles desprendimientos con ocasión de los movimientos telúricos, por lo que el tránsito fluye con normalidad.
Hernández Ávila precisó que el Sistema para Gestión de Riesgos de Desastres se encuentra activado, y subrayó que “estamos trabajando 24 horas para darles apoyo a los Municipios que así lo requieran”.

En eventual incremento de la magnitud de un fenómeno de esta naturaleza, el Huila será el más perjudicado, tal como se evidenció con la denominada avalancha del Paez.
El Volcán Nevado del Huila, situado en la frontera con el Cauca, es origen de una vertiente hídrica que alimenta El Páez y el rio Negro, que traen sus aguas Magdalena, tras cruzar por territorios de cierta densidad de población.
Un deshielo del nevado, generaría difíciles situaciones a las riberas del Magdalena desde Gigante hacia el Tolima, lo que obliga, a las autoridades regionales a mantener atentos, las 24 horas del día a comités de Prevención, pero sobre todo modernizar sistemas de comunicación y adiestrar a sus miembros y advertir constantemente a la población civil.
LA PREVISIÓN
Los sismos que pueden generar en terremotos, son fenómenos naturales que no pueden predecirse, surgen de un momento a otro a velocidad impresionante, con destrucción de vidas y elementos colocados sobre la superficie, eso implica que para mitigar el impacto y mitigar el riesgo, la única alternativa es la previsión, empleando los avances de la tecnología, el conocimiento científico, la observación de expertos y profundizar investigaciones, en cada región donde se conocen altas probabilidades, caso concreto El Volcán Nevado del Huila, la vasta zona que enmarca la falla geológica que atraviesa el Huila por su frontera con el Tolima y la mocedad de sus formaciones cordilleranas.
