Viendo los inmensos ríos humanos que en estos días han recorrido calles y llenado parques de las principales ciudades norteamericanas, en protesta por la muerte del joven afroamericano George Floyd en Minneapolis, recordé el conocido libro de Leo Huberman “Nosotros, el Pueblo. Una historia Socialista de los Estados Unidos”, publicado inicialmente en 1932, con una edición actualizada por el autor en 1947, y otra sin actualizar de 1964. Allí está la otra historia, no oficial, no de héroes y grandes personajes, sino de la masa anónima, de obreros y campesinos, que venidos de todas las partes del mundo, de todas las razas (blancos, negros, amarillos, mestizos), de todas las creencias religiosas (católicos, protestantes, mormones, adventistas, budistas, musulmanes) y de todas las ideologías (creyentes, agnósticos, ateos), fueron poblando el norte del continente americano, construyendo puertos en sus protegidas bahías y ensenadas, penetrando por sus grandes ríos hasta sus valles profundos, donde desarrollaron una agricultura de proporciones gigantescas, con el algodón que le abrió el camino a la industria textil, el maíz, el trigo la soya y la ganadería, para la industria alimenticia, los minerales para la industria pesada.
Seguro su idea era construir una nación libre y democrática como lo dejaron consignado los libertadores en la Constitución de Filadelfia de 1776. Aunque la audacia de estos no alcanzó para decretar la libertad de los esclavos y tuvieron que esperar 90 años y ganar la guerra civil para que Abraham Lincoln pudiera hacerlo en 1.865 cuando se aprobó la decimotercera enmienda constitucional. Sin embargo, un sector de la sociedad, alimentado en la derecha más radical del Partido Republicano y en los monopolios empresariales que comenzaban a consolidarse, tenían la visión de un gran imperio, superior al griego de Alejandro Magno, al romano de los césares, al español de los borbones y al inglés de la era victoriana. Esa visión imperial terminó siendo hegemónica en la élite gobernante norteamericana a medida que su éxito económica crecía. Con él se fortalecieron antivalores como el racismo, la xenofobia, la discriminación social y una concepción fascista del Estado, que hoy tiene en Donald Trump a uno de sus más peligrosos exponentes.
Es buen símbolo que un crimen atroz cometido ante las cámaras de televisión del mundo, no esté quedando impune y que millones de jóvenes de todos los colores salgan a protestar. Refleja muy bien la profunda crisis de la sociedad norteamericana. Ojalá esos jóvenes puedan volver realidad el sueño americano, de una sociedad verdaderamente libre y de progreso general.
