Cordial, como siempre, me acompañó hace un año en un trabajo de campo para recoger la actualidad de Campoalegre de cara al posconflicto, en desarrollo de una serie de crónicas sobre los municipios huilenses más afectados por la violencia guerrillera, que fueron publicadas en el Diario del Huila.
En la sala de su modesto apartamento, parado frente a un espejo de medio cuerpo, me dijo en tono tranquilo:
-Catañito, ahora si me siento atrapado por las garras de su famosa parca…me estoy muriendo.
Enseguida se me acercó, se empinó enérgico y frente a la imagen de los dos se irguió aún más y entonces vi a ese león combativo que siempre fue Guillermo de Castro en el ejercicio del periodismo.
-A ti no te vencerá el dolor, como nadie te ha vencido porque eres un personaje irreductible, le dije sin dimensionar la gravedad de su tenebrosa sentencia, que más parecía una de las tantas premoniciones de su habitual charlatanería.
Puso su mano izquierda sobre mi cabeza, me miró fijamente durante unos 15 segundos y de sus ojos brotaron dos lagrimones, como piedras brillantes, que se disolvieron en su boca. Su dolor, ahora era mi dolor, que ya gritaba en mi corazón y el «policía» advirtió que su gesto de sinceridad había tocado mi sensibilidad.
Fue directo al escritorio y después de mostrarme sus libros publicados y los originales de otro, me ordenó:
-Tómeme una foto, llavecita.
Me regaló un ejemplar de todas sus publicaciones y las copias de su último trabajo que, según sus propias palabras, «será el último pero con él condecoraré a la muerte».
Meses después, me habló por celular durante varios minutos y por el tono de su voz y por los gritos desgarradores de su alma, me convencí de que ya no solo estaba atrapado por la parca, sino que también le había tendido su mano…que la condecoración deseada se la había quedado engavetada en su escritorio.
Con sus denuncias vehementes en el noticiero «Alerta», por la recién nacida Radio Reloj -que sustituyó a la Voz del Huila- recogió los gritos de impotencia de los sectores populares y con firmeza agresiva respondió a la amenazas reiteradas con las que pretendieron intimidarlo.
Muchas veces me lo encontré en los senderos que nos puso a los dos el calvario de la indisciplina y el desorden, pero siempre mantuvo su temperamento de apóstol apasionado y su genial capacidad para reírse de la vida. Fue uno de los mejores caricaturistas de la cotidianidad, especialmente de la de los Medios, los periodistas, locutores y controles de radio.
Me cuentan desde Neiva algunos colegas, que pese a la inmensidad de su pena, hasta hace menos de dos meses, «el policía» encendía la risa en cafeterías y en las afueras del palacio de gobierno departamental, burlándose de sí mismo con tétrica serenidad.
Los senderos de la confusión y la perturbación del orden y las doctrinas personales, lo llevaron hasta las calles de la «caliente» y peligrosa calle de El Cartucho, en Bogotá, en donde durante algunos meses se castigó de manera cruel,hasta asomarse a la fuerza irresistible del abismo. Pero la resistencia de su alma convirtió esa oscura expedición en un apasionante placer de su espíritu conquistador y contemplativo.
Se va un alma compleja y contradictoria, llena de especial luminosidad y discontinuidad, pero singularmente rica en energías contestatarias, muy escasas en el periodismo huilense. Un hombre de excesos y excepciones, a la vez, incomprendido por algunas «figuras» del periodismo «preciosista», estéril y genuflexo que adquirió cierta estatura en la provincia colombiana.
Nunca buscó el aplauso y desde siempre habló, en charlas de cafetería y en foros, de la pereza sublime que hizo famoso el personaje «Celio» y de la envidia lívida que como sombra de rencor pasan por muchos huilenses, la suficientemente mencionada antropofagia política, cultural, económica y periodística de los opitas.

Siempre te recordaré como el periodista más apasionado por la sinceridad que tuve cerca, en la cabina de la Radio Reloj, a la cual llegué empujado por un gerente regional de Caracol, quien me sacó de la emisora básica, temeroso porque le descubrí su odio a la verdad.
En los últimos días, con los brazos abiertos a la desesperanza, el «policía» reclamó en vano la solidaridad de sus colegas, que apenas lo saludaron con las manitos frías de «todo bien» en las redes sociales, en una evidente actitud de fastidio y rechazo, similar a la que la sociedad adopta con los leprosos porque ni en la antesala de su muerte le perdonaron sus grafismos satíricos, amargos y hasta perversos con los que «bautizó» a muchas «personalidades» de la vida política, social, cultural y de los Medios del departamento del Huila.
Otro nombre que se agrega a la lista de los amigos muertos, que ya es más larga que la de los amigos vivos. Ya la vida es una avenida llena de tumbas y nos movemos en busca de la nuestra.
¡Hasta luego, «policía»!!, me alegró que te hayas separado de la línea que siguen los periodistas de tu querido Huila, al servicio del gobierno y los politiqueros de turno. ¡Tu cuerpo enjuto se disolverá ya mismo pero tu palabra entró en la inmortalidad, erguida y orgullosa, como tu silueta levantada sobre los talones aquella mañana cuando te vi por última vez, llavecita!!
