La Prima Ballerina Assolutta, como se le reconoce en su tierra natal, a sus 92 años sigue siendo la directora del Ballet Nacional de Cuba, institución que ella fundó y que este año cumple su 65 aniversario. Es Alicia Alonso, primerísima bailarina de ballet clásico de América. Un encuentro con una leyenda viva del arte y la cultura universal. Gerardo Meneses Claros Pitalito.

El decorado del salón pareciera sumergirlo a uno en otra época. Y en realidad así es. Los muebles de madera antigua, los tapices, los jarrones de porcelana y esos azulejos pintados a mano que forman un pequeño zócalo al interior de la sala, dan la sensación de estar en el set de una película, quizá de los años 50s. Mauricio Abreu, el jefe de prensa del Ballet Nacional de Cuba me ha concertado una cita con la señora Alicia en la sede del Ballet.
Él, con una ceremoniosidad que me intimida, me hace seguir a través de una puerta altísima, dominada por un vitral. Al fondo, de pie junto a su escritorio, estaba ella: Alicia Alonso. Mi primera reacción es de asombro, ella me saluda pero dirige su rostro hacia un lado, solo cuando yo contesto el saludo y me acerco a responder su abrazo, descubro que ella se guía por mi voz. La señora Alicia está ciega. “Colombia -me dice como recordando- lindas esmeraldas, café exquisito, y la gente, ay niño, la gente colombiana…” Paso del asombro a la veneración. Digo cualquier cosa, le doy las gracias, la veo y no me canso de admirarla. Es esbelta, erguida, parece una porcelana. Tiene más de 90 años y conserva el donaire de su profesión.
Es hermosa. Me invita a sentarnos y le pido que me cuente de su infancia, de cómo se hizo bailarina. “Uno no sabe realmente donde nace la pasión por lo que le gusta, seguro eso venía en mí, porque desde siempre me gustó la danza, el ballet. Amaba andar en punta de pies por la casa, tanto, que un día, al ir a abrir el portón, oí el regaño de mi padre que dijo algo así como: ¿será que esta niñita no puede andar como las niñas normales?” “Ay, mi padre, siempre tan guapo, tan estricto. Era médico veterinario y ejerció mucho tiempo en el Ejército Nacional Cubano; pero me quería tanto que me dejaba hacer lo que quisiera, hasta eso, andar en punta de pies para abrir la puerta”. -¿Y la madre? –le pregunto dejándola seguir con sus recuerdos. “Mi madre era costurera. Costurera fina, de modas. Ese era su oficio, que era más un arte. Me emocionaba verla crear la ropa que hacía, tan delicada, tan parecida a ella. Y mi tía, una mujer amante de las artes, llena de ingenio. Nací donde tenía que nacer”.
Los maestros
Pero el apoyo fue total –exclamo- “Pero fue más la disciplina, las ganas. Mira, era tan exigente conmigo siendo apenas una niñita, que hoy me sorprendo. Es que el ballet te obliga a un altísimo nivel de exigencia, de una disciplina impuesta que te convierte en otra. Yo empecé aquí en La Habana con el profesor ruso-ucraniano Nicolai Yavorski, pero pronto continué mi formación en Estados Unidos con grandes maestros de las antiguas escuelas italiana y rusa. ¿Recuerdas a alguno? –le pregunto: “Sí, claro: Enrico Zanfretta, Alexandra Fedorova, Anatole Vilzak…pero es que además de tener buenos maestros, yo me exigía mucho, mi formación se debe, en gran parte, a mi propio esfuerzo. Amo tanto la danza, que decidí entregar todo de mí para lograr una técnica y un dominio de los estilos del ballet”.
Tienes una voluntad de hierro, eso te llevo a ser lo que eres –le digo casi como un halago- “La disciplina es la única forma de alcanzar las metas más altas en este arte. Había veces en que terminaba con las zapatillas ensangrentadas. Como te lo estoy diciendo.” Le tomo las manos y le profeso mi admiración, mi respeto, le cuento que todos me dijeron que al dirigirme a ella la llamara “Prima Ballerina Assolutta”, que es el título con el que se conoce universalmente a una bailarina de su talla. “Esa es una gran responsabilidad ante el arte y ante el público. La crítica me ha otorgado ese nivel. Yo lo agradezco, pero no es fácil llevarlo porque no soy yo, es mi país; y mi mayor anhelo es que los bailarines en Latinoamérica lleven el ballet a esa altura, que esta tradición se conserve y que se engrandezca”. ¿Y Cuba? – Le pregunto cuando la oigo hablar de su tierra- ¿Qué es Cuba en la vida de Alicia Alonso? “Todo. Mis raíces, mi punto de partida. Aquí está mi esencia. Y es el pueblo que me ha dado su confianza y su amor” Igual te pasa en el resto del mundo –le digo-. “Gracias, la vida ha sido generosa conmigo. He bailado en tantas partes del mundo, en tantos escenarios, ha sido tanta gente la que me ha aplaudido durante toda la vida”.
¿Y Colombia? “También Colombia: el Teatro Colón, el Jorge Isaacs en Cali, el de Medellín que ahora se me olvida el nombre; el Gaitán de Bogotá ¿cómo se llama?” El Jorge Eliécer Gaitán –le respondo.
Directora vitalicia del Ballet Nacional
Bailarina, coreógrafa, maestra, Alicia Alonso se ha desempeñado en todos los campos para mantener viva la esencia del ballet. Hoy, a pesar de su edad y su limitación, sigue siendo la directora del Ballet Nacional de Cuba –hablemos un poco de eso- le pido. “Ayudar en la formación de los jóvenes lo considero un deber; y además es una bella tarea. Desde los inicios de mi carrera he sido maestra, me ha gustado transmitir los principios del arte al que he dedicado mi vida entera. Hoy tenemos primerísimas figuras del ballet formadas aquí en el Ballet Nacional de Cuba” ¿todos cubanos? –le pregunto tratando de no parecer ignorante. “No, –me responde con una risa bonita- si vieras, llegan de todas partes del mundo, de tu país vienen a formarse acá. Nos encanta recibir la gente de Incolballet de Cali, o los chicos del Ana Pavlova, de Bogotá.”
Supe que en España hay una cátedra que lleva tu nombre. “Honor que me han hecho. Y lo recibo con humildad, pero es el resultado también de lo que he hecho a lo largo de toda mi vida, la disciplina de la que te hablaba.” Una presentación inolvidable que siempre recuerdes –le pido. “He tenido grandes momentos en mi carrera y cada público, cada país me ha dado su aliento, su calor, que si me pides escoger uno en particular sería injusto”.

En las paredes de la escuela del Ballet Nacional reposan fotografías bellísimas que hacen honor a su creadora, a la señora Alicia, hay un cartel gigante que anuncia los festejos por los 75 años de la primera interpretación suya como Giselle, que se cumplirán en este 2013. Me llena de alegría ver esta mujer aparentemente frágil, como una muñequita de porcelana, que hoy sigue tan vital como en sus años de juventud. Le pregunto por esto, y le agradezco la gentileza de su tiempo y su calidez. “Vivo trabajando, hijo, llevando adelante el Ballet Nacional, creando nuevas coreografías, enseñando a los jóvenes, entregando toda mi experiencia y transmitiendo esta tradición y los principios estéticos y éticos del ballet. La vida me ha alcanzado para todo.”
Una mujer tan bella debió recibir muchos halagos –le confieso casi en broma- “Mi primer esposo fue Fernando Alonso, de él tomé el apellido artístico, fue el primero que me enamoró. Lo demás no te lo cuento”. Y un piropo que te hayan dicho, que te haya gustado –le pido- “Más que un piropo, fue algo que le escuché a alguien en la calle, frente al teatro: “Ven, entremos, que esta noche baila Alicia Alonso”.
