Este accidente geográfico se encuentra en la frontera Huila – Caquetá, sobre la depresión occidental de la cordillera Oriental y hace parte de la reserva natural La Siberia.
Por el centro del valle corre el río Balsillas y, todo indica que un represamiento de esta corriente, al romperse en la parte baja, le dió origen.
Todo el territorio plano, están dedicado a la ganadería intensiva, y sólo en la parte baja, se permitió un asentamiento convertido en inspección, cuyos habitantes dependen de la agricultura rudimentaria en las laderas de la cordillera.
Este valle es una símil de la planicie bogotana, con clima similar pero poco poblado.
Balsillas se encuentra en la zona media de la carretera Neiva – San Vicente del Caguán, vía cuya habilitación está, en los acuerdos que el Gobierno Colombiano firmó con Las FARC en La Habana.
