Para ser más rentables y fortalecer sus plataformas digitales, los dueños de El Tiempo Televisión, Televisa y Semana hicieron despidos masivos en los últimos meses. En sus redacciones algunos hablan ahora de silencio, desmotivación y miedo.

Entre diciembre de 2018 y marzo de 2019, alrededor de 320 personas perdieron sus empleos en varios medios de comunicación colombianos. De Publicaciones Semana salieron casi 90; de Editorial Televisa Colombia (casa editorial de Tv y Novelas, National Geographic y otras publicaciones), más de 100; en El Tiempo Televisión fueron cerca de 120; más otros 13 en VICE Colombia y siete en Semana Rural.
Entre agosto y octubre del 2018 salieron otras 90 personas de NTN24, canal de televisión que hace parte del grupo RCN. En diciembre de 2017 la presidencia de RCN Televisión fue asumida por José Roberto Arango, economista reconocido por “salvar” empresas que están en crisis o a punto de declararse en quiebra. Arango dejó el canal en octubre del año pasado.
Las empresas aducen que el recorte es una exigencia del mercado actual, pues la gente consume cada vez menos información de medios impresos o por televisión. La industria, dicen, aún no produce suficiente dinero en el escenario digital.
La Liga Contra el Silencio habló con más de 20 empleados y exempleados de estos medios y encontró varios denominadores comunes que permiten entender esta nueva crisis de los medios nacionales.

ACUERDOS NO TAN MUTUOS
En casi todos los casos, el mismo día de la noticia, los empleados recibieron dos opciones para quedarse sin trabajo. La primera: firmar una terminación de contrato por mutuo acuerdo, que impide a los exempleados demandar al medio si consideran que algún derecho laboral fue vulnerado. La segunda: un despido sin justa causa. Aquí el periodista recibía también su indemnización y todos los pagos correspondientes, pero quedaba expuesto a un veto por no haber firmado el primer acuerdo, según aseguran varias personas entrevistadas.
“Legalmente es cierto que no fue despido, porque la mayoría de la gente se fue tras firmar ese acuerdo mutuo. Pero en la práctica sabemos que lo fue. No todos tuvieron la opción de llamar a un abogado para asesorarse y tomar la mejor decisión”, cuenta una de las periodistas que trabajaba en Publicaciones Semana, despedida en diciembre, que pidió no ser identificada. “A mí trataron de decirme que si no firmaba me iba a quedar la mancha en la hoja de vida, que luego no me iban a contratar en otra parte. Pero es que yo no hice nada malo para que me echaran”, dice.
Otros dos periodistas que pasaron por Semana hace años, despedidos en distintos momentos, confirman que es una vieja práctica de esa casa editorial. Según dicen, la revista ha ofrecido pagos adicionales a los despedidos para que firmen el acuerdo.
Una de ellos demandó a Publicaciones Semana porque trabajó durante cuatro años por prestación de servicios, pero en la práctica era empleada de la revista: cumplía horario, tenía oficina y parqueadero asignados, estaba obligada a salir durante las vacaciones colectivas y debía pedir permiso para ir a citas médicas o salir de viaje. Cuando en otras publicaciones necesitaban gente, la llamaban para apoyar, como hacen con los empleados de planta. Cuando la despidieron, ella decidió no firmar el documento.
“Me llamaron de recursos humanos y me dijeron que hasta ahí llegaba el trabajo, y necesitaban que firmara el acuerdo ante el Ministerio del Trabajo o un juzgado. Pedí ver el documento y me dijeron que no, que solo lo vería cuando fuera a firmar”, dice. La periodista se negó a firmar porque esto le impediría demandar más adelante. Entonces, según recuerda, le dijeron que si firmaba podría volver a trabajar con Semana y con otros medios en el futuro. Ella consideró esto “una amenaza velada”. Junto a la periodista salieron otras dos personas. “Un día, antes de ir al juzgado, llamaron a los otros dos para decirles que querían reconocer su trabajo, y les iban a pagar un mes más de sueldo. Pero debían firmar el documento para recibirlo”, cuenta la periodista.
Casi un mes después de salir, la llamaron de otra área para que se encargara de la coordinación de un especial como freelance. Sin embargo, luego dijeron que no podían darle trabajo en Publicaciones Semana por una orden de gerencia.
El 3 de abril, en un pleito contra esta empresa, la justicia le dio la razón a la periodista en primera instancia, y le ordenó a Semana pagar las prestaciones sociales que le debe. Semana apeló la decisión.
La periodista no quiso volver a trabajar en medios, y esta es una de las reacciones frecuentes entre las personas consultadas después de los despidos. Abunda el desencanto y el escepticismo. “No se habla públicamente de esto en los medios. Hablar asusta, porque el que hable se va. O no vuelve a conseguir trabajo”, dice ella.
En su respuesta oficial a La Liga, Publicaciones Semana declaró que “la terminación de contratos por mutuo acuerdo está establecida y tiene un modelo estandarizado ajustado a la normatividad”. La empresa insiste en que actúa de forma correcta y considera que las percepciones de algunos empleados “no están fundamentadas”.
A principios de este año se anunció la compra del 50 por ciento de Publicaciones Semana por parte de los empresarios Jaime y Gabriel Gilinski. En un comunicado se aseguró que la transacción no afectará la independencia editorial de la revista, y que los cambios fortalecerán sus formatos digitales. Sin embargo, varios reporteros se preguntan qué posición tomarán las revistas del grupo cuando su trabajo toque los intereses de sus nuevos dueños, que incluyen bancos y hoteles.
Ahora los cuatro medios más grandes del país pertenecerán a los cuatro grupos económicos más poderosos: la mitad de Semana queda en manos de este grupo; la Casa Editorial El Tiempo pertenece a Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo, del Grupo Aval; RCN Radio y RCN Televisión son de la Organización Ardila Lülle; mientras Caracol Televisión y el diario El Espectador están manejados por el Grupo Santo Domingo.
SILENCIO
En el documento de terminación de contrato por mutuo acuerdo suele incluirse una cláusula de confidencialidad que impide a los firmantes hablar de la forma en que ocurrió su salida de la empresa.
Según tres periodistas de Editorial Televisa que quedaron sin empleo en enero, cuando les dieron la noticia también les informaron que nadie podía salir del edificio sin firmar el documento. “El gerente financiero, una abogada y alguien de recursos humanos tenían listos nuestros papeles. No dieron explicaciones. Solo dijeron que la decisión se había tomado el día anterior a las 12 de la noche”, recuerda uno de ellos. Según dice, les pidieron no avisar a nadie para guardar la confidencialidad mientras se concretaban sus liquidaciones.
“Era una posición de tómalo o déjalo. Pero si no lo tomas, te metes en problemas. No lo dijeron explícitamente; nadie cuestionó nada y todos firmamos, pero fue la sensación que quedó”, dice otra de las personas que tenían contrato con Televisa desde hacía más de diez años. “El gerente financiero siempre fue muy amable con todos y no hubo malos tratos, pero tampoco hubo palabras de agradecimiento”.
La Liga contactó a Adrián Martínez, gerente financiero y el único mexicano que queda hoy en Televisa Colombia, quien mostró interés en responder todas las preguntas sobre este tema. Pero al momento de la publicación de esta historia todavía no lo había hecho.
EMPLEOS INESTABLES
Germán Jiménez era productor del programa Mejor Hablemos, conducido por Claudia Palacios, y que se transmitía en CityTV y El Tiempo Televisión. Periodista especializado en temas judiciales, con más de 30 años de experiencia, Jiménez ha sobrevivido a tres recortes: uno en El Espectador, cuando pasó de diario a semanario en 2001; otro en abril de 2018, cuando era editor nocturno de El Tiempo y salieron cientos de personas de toda la empresa; y el tercero en febrero pasado.
Para entrar al equipo de Palacios, en septiembre de 2018, a Jiménez lo contrataron con Summar, una empresa de empleos temporales. La figura usada fue la del contrato misión, que no tiene término y se paga por realizar un trabajo específico. Este tipo de contrato produce una alta inestabilidad, pues en muchos casos la persona no sabe cuánto tiempo durará su “misión”.
A Jiménez le pagaron sus prestaciones sociales cuando salió de Mejor Hablemos, pero no le dieron indemnización. “Se acabó el programa, acabó la misión del contrato y me liquidaron. Y fue todo”, dice. En las mismas condiciones salieron varios empleados técnicos del canal, como sonidistas y camarógrafos.
La Liga habló con Claudia Palacios, exdirectora de Mejor Hablemos y del noticiero Tu Mundo Hoy, que también se quedó sin empleo por el cierre de El Tiempo Televisión. Periodista de amplia experiencia en medios colombianos e internacionales como CNN en Español, dice que siempre fue muy honesta con su equipo, porque desde su llegada, en mayo de 2017, sabía que el canal enfrentaba problemas económicos. “Siempre les dije que si tenían oportunidades en otros sitios, no lo pensaran y se fueran. Yo tuve libertad para elegir a mi equipo y hacer mis contenidos, pero la pregunta de fondo aquí es qué tanta autonomía y libertad se tienen cuando no hay suficientes recursos”, dice la periodista.
En el primer semestre de 2018, el canal despidió a sus corresponsales en el país y se quedó sin cámaras.
“Cuando nos quitan los equipos, nos damos cuenta de que algo está pasando, y la gente empieza a preocuparse. El ambiente ahí se puso más tenso”, recuerda uno de los que se salvaron del cierre de El Tiempo Televisión. Las alternativas fueron recibir material de las agencias internacionales y de las fuentes vía WhatsApp, pero sin ir ya a los lugares donde se producía la información. “El rating cayó y para los periodistas fue un totazo: ya no estarás en la calle, como toca, sino sentado en el set, redactando tus notas sin entrevistar a nadie en cámara”.
CON MIEDO Y SIN RECURSOS
“Delete”. Es decir, borrar. Así llamaban los empleados de Semana a Deloitte, la consultora que esa revista contrató el año pasado para que la asesorara. La misma empresa fue contratada antes por la Casa Editorial El Tiempo para hacer una reestructuración enorme.
“El ambiente era espantoso. En octubre anunciaron que venía Deloitte y nadie era tan bobo como para no darse cuenta de que iban a sacar gente. Por eso todos le decían delete”, cuenta una periodista que salió de esa empresa en diciembre. Según ella, el segundo semestre de 2018 fue de angustia: los jefes decían que la cosa iba mal y culpaban a los periodistas. “Es injusto porque nosotros no tenemos que vender. Nosotros estamos para informar, y para hacerlo bien debemos hacerlo en buenas condiciones”, dice.
Según la periodista, el lema en Semana “era producir, producir y producir. Pero en ningún momento hubo una discusión profunda acerca de la calidad de lo que se estaba produciendo”. Entre otras señales de alerta, comenzaron a reducir los equipos de las revistas Jet Set, Fucsia y SoHo. Después decidieron fusionarlas. Los que quedaron entonces debían escribir, diseñar, tomar fotos y corregir textos para todos esos títulos, y además trabajar para la llamada “fábrica de revistas”, donde hacen otros productos pagados, como la revista de Avianca. Con la llegada de Deloitte, según dice otra de las personas que salió en diciembre, “empezaron incluso a pedir informes de porcentajes de dedicación diaria a cada revista”.
La empresa argumenta los cambios que vienen ocurriendo en los medios. “El modelo de negocio que funcionaba hace varios años ya no es viable. Quedarse quieto en estos momentos y no replantear las estructuras ha significado la muerte de muchas casas editoriales (…). Los perfiles cambian y las necesidades también”, dice.
En 2017 la Casa Editorial El Tiempo hizo un concurso donde cada área debía proponer ideas para generar nuevos ingresos. Había un jurado y premios en dinero para las propuestas ganadoras que podían ser implementadas en la empresa. En casi todas se proponía recortar el personal.
MULTITAREAS
Según confirmó La Liga con varias fuentes en Semana, después del despido masivo muchos de los que quedaron realizan ahora labores distintas a las estipuladas en su contrato. “Hay una carga laboral mucho más fuerte, porque no cubrieron los puestos de los que salieron”, dice un periodista que sigue adentro. Pero nadie se queja, afirma, “porque nadie se quiere quedar sin trabajo”.
El editor de finanzas personales, por ejemplo, ahora maneja las redes sociales de Semana. La editora de Jet Set también atiende ahora Fucsia y SoHo. Hay un solo editor internacional, una sola diagramadora, un solo productor de fotografía y un solo corrector de estilo para las tres revistas. Los que están en la “fábrica de revistas” escriben para todos los títulos. “Es una maquila”, dice otra fuente. “Pero tranquilos, que vamos a necesitar mucho freelance”, les dijo una de las líderes editoriales de Publicaciones Semana a varios de los que salieron.
En el caso de los trabajadores de planta ahora cesantes, ninguno de los entrevistados en Semana, Televisa, El Tiempo Televisión o VICE se quejó por haber recibido una liquidación inferior a la legal o por una liquidación tardía.
Pero el asunto se complica con los proveedores, que trabajan con los medios por contratos de prestación de servicios. Varios de los que lo hacían para la editorial mexicana en Colombia denunciaron que al momento de salir la compañía les debía cuentas desde hacía hasta ocho meses, y nadie los llamó para que se acercaran a cobrar. Al momento de publicar esta historia, a la mayoría ya les habían cancelado las deudas. Pero muchos solo recibieron entre el 20 y el 50 por ciento del dinero.
“Yo me enteré porque alguien de adentro, que también se quedó sin trabajo, me llamó a avisarme. ¿Por qué ese hermetismo? Yo eso lo considero maltrato”, cuenta un proveedor que pidió no ser identificado. Le pagaron la mitad de lo que le debían. El argumento de la empresa es que no tenía cómo pagar todo.
En Colombia, adonde llegó hace casi 30 años, Televisa tenía un portafolio de decenas de publicaciones, entre ellas TV y Novelas, Caras, Tú, Ser padres hoy, In Fashion y Muy Interesante. Además, tenía la licencia para editar marcas como National Geographic, Cosmopolitan, Vanidades y hasta la revista de Condorito. Pocas semanas después de anunciar su cierre en el país, el emporio mexicano anunció su salida de Chile. Años antes se había ido de Argentina, Perú y Puerto Rico.
