El biólogo indonesio Kevin Kumala diseñó unas bolsas hechas de yuca que son 100% biodegradables y que al contacto con el agua, se disuelven y se convierten en alimento y bebida.
Kevin Kumala nació en Balí, Indonesia. Pasó su infancia recorriendo las paradisíacas playas de ese país del Sudeste asiático, regocijándose con su belleza y pureza. Abandonó su país durante diez años para estudiar bilogía en Estados Unidos. Pero lo que vio al regresar en el año 2009 lo dejó atónito: las playas de su infancia eran ahora basureros irreconocibles.
El indonesio le dijo al diario Southeast Asia Globe que “cuando me iba a surfear o a bucear, esto ya no representaba un placer para mí. Encontraba plástico en cualquier lugar que visitaba en Bali. Esto se convirtió en algo muy frustrante para mí”. Por eso, Kumala decidió hacer algo.
Sabía que en un mundo que bota al mar ocho millones de toneladas de plástico al año, decirle a la gente que dejara de consumir productos desechables era un proyecto a largo plazo, y que por eso, debía ingeniárselas para diseñar una solución en el corto plazo.
Fue así como surgió Avani Eco, una empresa que produce implementos que son similares al plástico a la vista y al tacto, pero que están hechos con productos 100% biodegradables. La idea es tan innovadora que este año recibió el premio “Most Valued Bussines Indonesia”, que premia a las iniciativas más responsables con el medio ambiente en ese país.
Su producto bandera es una bolsa hecha con almidón de yuca. Indonesia produce cada año 25,2 toneladas de este tubérculo, y usándolo, Kumala se ideó una bolsa tan resistente como las convencionales pero que, al llegar al mar, se disuelve y no deja ningún residuo tóxico. En tiempo máximo durante el cual la bolsa existe es de 100 días. Una bolsa plástica regular puede tardarse hasta 400 años en desaparecer.
Avani Eco, la compañía que fundó hace tres años, crea además productos hechos con materiales como la caña de azúcar y la maicena. Pitillos, cajas portables de alimentos, envases para llevar el café, saleros y pimenteros, vasos y cubiertos son algunos de los productos que Kumala ha diseñado.
Si bien la iniciativa ha sido aplaudida en diversos escenarios, está claro que lo que hay que atacar es la raíz del problema: el consumo excesivo de plástico en las sociedades industrializadas. Y es que, en este sentido, los datos son alarmantes: en enero de 2016, un informe de la Fundación Ellen MacArthur reveló que si la humanidad no se detiene, para el año 2050 el plástico presente en el océano pesará el doble que los peces que allí habitan.
