En Colombia, el cáncer infantil se ha incrementado de manera significativa, siendo esta la segunda causa de muerte en los menores de 18 años, pues para el año 2020 se reportaron 950 casos nuevos, mientras que en el 2019 esta cifra rondaba los 656 casos según la Cuenta de Alto Costo. Es así que, de cara al día internacional del cáncer infantil, entidades de salud hacen un llamado a la detección oportuna de esta enfermedad.
El cáncer es la segunda causa de muerte en menores de 18 años en Colombia
Según la Cuenta de Alto Costo, en el periodo comprendido entre enero del 2019 y enero del 2020, se reportó un 58,72% de muertes en niños entre los 5 y 14 años, siendo esta la población más afectada por dicha afección y para el mismo periodo, la muerte en niñas del mismo rango de edad representó un 41,28%.

El documento también resalta que las regiones con mayor mortalidad son Bogotá con 45,42% seguido de Amazonía-Orinoquía con un 32,69% y finalmente la región Oriental con 29,50% de muertes en niños menores de 18 años por algún tipo de cáncer. Igualmente, destaca que la región con menor tasa de mortalidad es la Pacífico con un 16,65%.
Por otro lado, el boletín epidemiológico realizado por el Instituto Nacional de Salud, señala que el cáncer con mayor prevalencia en los menores de 18 años es el de leucemia linfoide aguda, con un total de 459 casos nuevos en el último año, seguido de los tumores SNC con 241 y de los linfomas y neoplasias reticuloendoteliales con 187 casos nuevos.
En este sentido, el doctor Uriel Castro, médico auditor de Ecoopsos EPS hace un llamado a la comunidad en general con el fin de poder detectar de manera oportuna los síntomas de alerta, “es importante que logremos identificar esos síntomas que pueden llevar a un tratamiento oportuno de estas enfermedades, con el fin de disminuir las alarmantes cifras de mortalidad”.

El experto advierte que es importante tener en cuenta si el menor tiene fiebre, pérdida de peso sin causa aparente, cansancio, fatiga, además de anemia, crecimiento de los ganglios, sudoración abundante, sangrado, vómito en las mañanas, dolores intensos, entre otros síntomas.
Asimismo, asegura que los factores de riesgo que pueden ocasionar esta enfermedad son hereditarios, genéticos, hermanos con leucemia, exposición a la radiación o supresión del sistema inmune, por lo que insiste en la detección y atención oportuna.

De esta manera, el doctor Uriel Castro, recomienda tener en cuenta algunos aspectos importantes con el fin de evitar mayores riesgos. “Es importante evitar el consumo de alcohol y tabaco durante el embarazo, reducir la exposición a la contaminación ambiental relacionada con el tráfico, además de limitar la cantidad de radiación usada durante algunos exámenes médicos y prevenir experiencias adversas en la niñez, con lo cual, podemos ayudar a reducir los altos índices que hoy en día posiciona a estas enfermedades como la segunda causa de muerte en Colombia”.
Finalmente, el experto asegura que es pertinente lograr tiempos de atención más cortos con el fin de obtener diagnósticos y tratamientos oportunos, siendo una prioridad el bienestar y salud de los niños que atraviesan esta situación.
