Después de recorrer durante algo más de 20 años las calles empolvadas de Pitalito, sur del departamento del Huila, y de transportar a por lo menos dos generaciones de laboyanos -gentilicio de los nacidos en Pitalito-, el viejo bus de la Normal Superior se convirtió en un centro de lectura.
El bus fue entregado a la Institución educativa en el año 1970, hace 52 años, para facilitar el transporte de estudiantes y docentes. Por esos días La Normal Superior estaba ubicada en una zona rural, la que hoy, por el crecimiento del municipio, se convirtió en el popular barrio Cálamo.

“Ese bus duró mucho en servicio. Los que estudiamos en La Normal nos acordamos de la ruta que hacía, luego yo fui maestro de La Normal y todavía el bus se utilizaba para las salidas, para todo”, narra Gerardo Meneses, el reconocido escritor de literatura infantil, exalumno y ahora docente, además de ser uno de los gestores de la iniciativa de convertir el viejo bus en un centro literario.
Cuentan que el bus, gracias al cuidado de los conductores que tuvo, siempre estuvo en buenas condiciones, sin embargo, un día llegó al centro educativo una comunicación de los ministerios de Educación y Transporte en la que ordenaban pararlo, argumentando que ya había cumplido su vida útil y que seguir utilizándolo podría ser un peligro para estudiantes y docentes.

“Lo curioso es que el bus estaba intacto en todo, pero los papeles fueron dados de baja, ya no servían, entonces los directivos lo que hicieron fue archivarlo, guardarlo, meterlo en un garaje y allí terminó su vida útil”, cuenta Gerardo, uno de los mayores conocedores de la historia, no solo de La Normal, sino de Pitalito.
Allí estuvo guardado, empolvado durante varios años, hasta que un día, en una reunión de docentes de literatura, surgió la idea de convertirlo en biblioteca o sala de lectura, una idea que les sonó a todos quienes de inmediato se pusieron en la tarea de evaluar posibilidades y costos.
“Un día dijimos: ¡Vamos a hacerlo! y lo primero fue, plata no hay. Entonces definimos que íbamos a rifar cinco libros míos, hicimos muchas boletas y entregamos los libros autografiados, con todo el show, la foto, etc., y esa sola rifa nos dejó una ganancia de seis millones de pesos, eso fue un gran aporte para arrancar”, narra Gerardo.

También vendieron galletas y dulces en los salones y luego hicieron un convenio con una sala de cine, a quienes también les gustó la idea y se comprometieron a aportar mil pesos por cada persona que entrara a la sala. Fue tal el apoyo de estudiantes y los padres, que luego de esta actividad ya tenían 14 millones de pesos aproximadamente.
“Es algo muy bonito. Un maestro trabaja por vocación y servicio y eso se ve todos los días en una escuela pública donde recursos no hay, pero cuando existe y florece esa vocación, amor por lo que se hace, ganas de trabajar por la comunidad, los maestros son líderes impresionantes. Yo que recorro el país visitando escuelas y colegios de tantas regiones del país soy testigo de eso y pues en La Normal Superior de Pitalito pasó algo parecido”, dice Gerardo Meneses, un docente sensible, lleno de amor por su trabajo, sus alumnos y por la literatura.
Cuando las directivas de la institución se enteraron de los recursos que con mucho esfuerzo habían conseguido los docentes de literatura, decidieron hacer su aporte. Ser trató de la placa en concreto en uno de los parques de la institución, el punto donde quedaría anclado el viejo bus para retomar su servicio, esta vez sin rodar, pero sirviendo de sede para que niños, niñas y adolescentes disfruten de la literatura.

El paso siguiente fue buscar la persona que hiciera los diseños para convertirlo en centro de lectura y no fue difícil. Exalumnos de la Normal, hoy profesionales en ingeniaría industrial y arquitectura, regalaron su conocimiento y trabajo y entregaron los diseños que luego materializaron otros profesionales de Pitalito.
“Esta etapa fue muy bonita, lo primero fue la transformación del bus en centro de lectura, la ubicación de las sillas y la creación de un jardín alrededor del bus”, describe Gerardo.
El punto final para entregarlo al servicio fue la dotación. “Tocamos puertas y gracias Dios y los contactos con el Ministerio de Cultura, Fundalectura, el Banco de la República, las editoriales que publican mis libros, fue relativamente fácil conseguir muchos cuentos y libros de literatura, fue simplemente tocar puertas. En la medida que vamos necesitando, seguimos haciendo actividades para comprar más libros”, agrega Gerardo Meneses, quien termina su relato con una reflexión:
“A los niños les encanta subir al bus a ver libros animados, a leer y pasarla bien… En una sociedad tan difícil, muy inmersa en medio de lo digital, los niños siguen siendo de afecto y eso lo dan los libros. Es increíble verlos cómo leen, cómo piden para llevar libro a casa, y que uno esté ahí para ayudarlos es genial”.
Hoy el viejo bus renace y seguramente prestará sus servicios, no a dos generaciones como lo hizo cuando rodó por las calles de Pitalito, ahora estático lo hará por muchas décadas.
