Lentamente, como quien despierta de un largo sueño, la sociedad se va reintegrando a la realidad para entender que, no todo lo del sueño digital es maravilloso.
Las autoridades en aquel sector de Ciudad Bolívar, en Bogotá, no podían creer ante el cadáver del hombre linchado por sus propios vecinos, enceguecidos por la indignación y por las informaciones de internet que lo habían señalado como ladrón y violador de niños. Cuando la ira cedió y tomó el control la razón, vieron que un rumor malintencionado y potenciado por la plataforma digital, los había manipulado contra la víctima. En ese momento no se entendió el fenómeno con la contundencia con que lo ve el experto Gerry Garbulsky: “Google tiene un poder de daño más grande que todas las bombas nucleares juntas”, dijo en una entrevista sobre el tema. No se refería al episodio contado atrás, pero hubiera podido servirle de ilustración.
El daño que sigue al mal uso de lo digital es tanto más insidioso porque un mensaje de internet ofrece una apariencia inocente, que engaña a quienes o lo ignoran o no han entendido lo que significan hechos atroces como el asesinato de 50 personas a comienzos de este año en dos mezquitas de Nueva Zelanda, mientras el asesino lo grababa todo y los transmitía desde su celular a las redes sociales. Facebook suspendió esa transmisión sólo 17 minutos después; pero esa tardía reacción no remedió nada; para entonces ya se difundía ese video por las redes con su corrosivo mensaje de terror.
¿Qué hacer frente a esto? La respuesta emocional es la del gobierno que impone sanciones que han sido y serán descalificadas en nombre de la libertad de prensa, o que lo enfrentan a los paraestados digitales.
Una respuesta más inteligente, aunque con efectividad a largo plazo, es la de las educación de los usuarios, de quienes depende que las redes comuniquen y no solo conecten; que sirvan para el debate inteligente y no solo para el desfogue de lo peor de las personas, para que sea búsqueda en común de la verdad y no espejo de todos los narcisos que solo se ven a sí mismos en la red convertida en espejo de ególatras. Es, pues, una tarea educativa profunda que desborda las posibilidades de gobiernos y tecnólogos.
Ante la alerta encendidas en vísperas de unas elecciones interferidas por los aullidos de los políticos y sus bárbaros, las empresas digitales se apresuran con guías para alfabetizar, con talleres, con recomendaciones de seguridad, pero el problema es otro.
Tiene que ver con la cultura digital atravesada por la avidez económica, por la fiebre de consumo y, sobre todo, por discursos de odio y estímulos enfermizos al ego de las personas que lo convierten en espejo que amplía su insignificancia. Contra esto, la sanción social, la desmitificación de lo digital, el reaprendizaje para descubrir el potencial positivo de lo digital que lo revela como intento humanizador y con capacidad de acercamiento real entre las personas.
Era pronóstico lo de Einstein cuando decía: “temo el día en que la tecnología supere el contacto humano; ese día habrá una generación de idiotas”. Esa es la amenaza.
