La desesperada súplica de Jaime Garzón a Carlos Castaño para que le perdonara la vida.
Las lecciones del exdirector del DAS, José Miguel Narváez, con su cátedra ¿Por qué es lícito matar comunistas? taladraron de tal forma la mente del jefe paramilitar que nada pudo impedir matar a Garzón
Tres días antes de que lo mataran, Jaime Garzón entró a la cárcel Modelo de Bogotá para encontrarse con el jefe paramilitar Ángel Custodio Gaitán. La razón de la entrevista era suplicar por su vida ya que el periodista tenía la certeza que había entrado en la lista negra de Carlos Castaño. Gaitán no le dio falsas esperanzas y le dijo en seco que parar esa orden era muy difícil; el patrón era como Dios, lo que decía, lo cumplía.
El 13 de agosto de 1999 a las 5 y 45 de la mañana Jaime Garzón se dio cuenta de que sus miedos no eran infundados: dos sicarios pertenecientes a la banda La Terraza, contratados previamente por Carlos Castaño, le dispararon en el último semáforo que lo separaba de su destino, las oficinas de la emisora RADIONET. A la escena del crimen llegaron rápidamente funcionarios del DAS a preparar el sainete: contrataron a una vecina del lugar, de nombre María Amparo Arroyabe quien señaló a Juan Pablo Ortiz Agudelo alias Bochas y a Edilberto Antonio Sierras, dos delincuentes de poca monta que tendrían ahora que ir a la cárcel y ser objeto del repudio nacional por un crimen que no cometieron.
El país sabía que a Garzón lo iban a matar las autodefensas. No sólo sus bromas televisivas, que enfurecían a Carlos Castaño y a la enrarecida cúpula militar de la época, sino la gestión humanitaria que adelantaba con la gobernación de Cundinamarca para la liberación de secuestrados en poder del ELN, una labor mucho más efectiva que los burdos intentos realizados por el GAULA o el Ejército para rescatar a los rehenes, y las irresponsables insinuaciones del general Mora Rangel de que el humorista era simpatizante de la guerrilla, eran hechos que lo convertían en un blanco demasiado visible.
La idea de matarlo había surgido un año atrás, en 1998. En esos tiempos el proyecto paramilitar empezaba a imponerse en Colombia con el beneplácito de altos funcionarios del Estado y generales del Ejército. La idea no era sólo preparar físicamente a los combatientes para enfrentarse con sus rivales rojos, sino también ideológicamente. Uno de los profesores más aventajados en este tinglado era José Miguel Narváez, un recio, estudiado y convincente instructor de la Escuela Superior de Guerra, quien se ganó el respeto y admiración de los jefes paramilitares por su cátedra titulada ¿Por qué es lícito matar comunistas en Colombia?
Las clases se daban entre un ambiente distendido y festivo en Urabá, en las fincas La Veintiuno y La Quince, ambas de propiedad de Carlos Castaño. Al hijo ilustre de Amalfi le encantaba la erudición con la que manejaba el tema de la lucha anticomunista aquel catedrático. Por eso, un día antes de empezar la charla, mandaba matar novillos y hacía un asado pantagruélico con el fin de agasajar a su maestro. Decían, incluso, que este oficial de reserva tenía una oficina ahí mismo, en la finca La veintiuno, por disposición de sus amigos los paracos.
A las reuniones que se dieron en estas fincas, Narváez llevaba casi siempre un cartapacio de hojas con los perfiles de los probables insurgentes que Castaño debería sacar del camino. A sus manos llegaron los expedientes de Álvaro Leyva Durán, Wilson Borja, Manuel Cepeda Vargas, Piedad Córdoba y Jaime Garzón. Sobre matar a este último le surgían dudas al jefe Paramilitar. Era una figura pública, querida por todos los colombianos. Aunque El fantasma odiara el programa en el que entre chiste y broma Garzón iba denunciando las atrocidades que el proyecto paramilitar empezaba a perpetrar a lo largo y ancho del territorio nacional, no dejaba de tratarse de un inocente humorista.
Pero Narváez le taladró el cerebro de tal forma que Castaño terminó por creer que el periodista efectivamente era de las FARC. Sobre la macabra insistencia que tenía el catedrático para que las autodefensas mataran a Garzón ha dado testimonio Piedad Córdoba, quien afirma haber escuchado, mientras estuvo secuestrada por las AUC, al futuro asesor del Ministerio de Defensa hablándole a Castaño de las supuestas pruebas de que el comediante era guerrillero, declaraciones que han sido confirmadas por los jefes paramilitares Jorge Iván Laverde, alias El Iguano, Leonardo González Quinchía, alias Yunda, Julián Bolívar, Raúl Hasbún, El alemán y Juan Rodríguez García.
Don Berna, desde su prisión en Estados Unidos, dijo estas palabras sobre Narváez: “El doctor siempre se jactaba de sus relaciones con miembros de la alta cúpula del Ejército, por lo tanto para cualquier sugerencia y orientación se daba como un hecho que tenía la aprobación o el visto bueno de miembros de alto rango del Ejército colombiano”. Los jefes paramilitares además aseguran que Narváez pertenecía a “Los doce apóstoles”, una docena de célebres hacendados antioqueños que colaboraban financieramente con las AUC y entre los que se destacaban Emiro Pérez, Álvaro Vásquez y, al parecer, Santiago Uribe Vélez, hermano del expresidente Álvaro Uribe. Este grupo ordenaría alrededor de un centenar de asesinatos entre los años 1992 y 1996.
Efectivamente los tentáculos de Narváez dentro de la Brigada XIII del Ejército colombiano llegaban hasta el corazón de la misma. El coronel Plazas Acevedo había sido nombrado por su amigo, el general Rito Alejo del Río, como jefe de inteligencia de esta división. Poco o nada le importó al general hacer este nombramiento, a pesar de que había fuertes rumores que implicaban al coronel en el magnicidio de Álvaro Gómez. A los pocos meses de estar en el cargo, ocurre el secuestro y posterior asesinato del industrial israelí Benjamin Khoudari en los que el militar también estaría implicado.
Plazas Acevedo fue el encargado de armar el expediente sobre Jaime Garzón en donde estaban registrados todos los movimientos del humorista. Día y noche, durante más de dos meses, le siguieron el rastro hasta conocer todos sus gustos y rutinas. Este informe le fue entregado a Carlos Castaño en julio de 1999, un mes antes del asesinato.
Tres días antes de su muerte, Jaime se entera de que lo van a matar. Además de ir a la cárcel Modelo a hablar con Custodio Gaitán, se comunica con el entonces Ministro de Defensa, Rafael Pardo, busca, infructuosamente, al General Jorge Enrique Mora y logra hablar con Rito Alejo del Río. Garzón sabía cuáles eran los militares que apoyaban la causa paramilitar y sin embargo, no pudo hacer nada para salvarse.
Al parecer Castaño se arrepintió de esta muerte y a raíz de ella dejó de confiar en las sugerencias y consejos de Narváez. El DAS cumplió con su parte y desvió la investigación con sus testigos falsos y sus sospechosos de siempre encarcelados. Para José Miguel Narváez este no fue el principio del fin; al contrario, fue el inicio de un vertiginoso ascenso.
Poco antes de que Andrés Pastrana entregara su presidencia, Narváez se convertiría en asesor del Ministerio de Defensa, cargo en el que no duraría mucho por un escándalo de interceptación de llamadas. Gracias a sus amistades, este hombre logró caer parado; cuenta el exdirector del DAS Jorge Noguera Cote que una de las primeras órdenes que dio Álvaro Uribe Vélez, al sentarse en el solio de Bolívar, fue nombrar a Narváez como subdirector de inteligencia del DAS a pesar de su extenso prontuario. Allí volvió a estar vinculado con irregularidades como el escándalo de las persecuciones y chuzadas telefónicas a los opositores del gobierno, delito por el que fue detenido a finales del 2010.
Si bien Narváez ha negado rotundamente los señalamientos sobre su rol en el asesinato de Garzón, todas las pruebas apuntan como un pelotón de fusilamiento hacia él.
La muerte del comediante coincidió con un cambio en las estructuras del poder del país: la clase dirigente tradicional le abriría paso al paramilitarismo. No se necesitó de un golpe de Estado, sino de la cooptación de votos, del amañe del algunos senadores, de la entrega oportuna de un sobre de billetes o de una amenaza. En este cambio de piel las balas asesinas echaron al río del tiempo a intelectuales y activistas sociales de la talla de Eduardo Umaña Mendoza, Mario Calderón, José María Valle, Darío Betancourt, Elsa Alvarado y tantos otros periodistas, políticos y pensadores que ya no cabían en el modelo de país que se abría camino.
El de Jaime fue el homicidio más doloroso porque todos lo conocíamos. Saber quiénes fueron sus asesinos ayudará a atenuar esa pena que se antoja eterna. El hecho de que ese crimen no quede impune ayudará, sin duda, a la reconciliación definitiva.
