En 1949 el liberalismo que se presumía heredero de las tesis revolucionarias de López Pumarejo, no apoyó la candidatura de JORGE ELIECER GAITÁN, quien en 1947 había asumido la jefatura única del partido. Sólo el sector más popular de esa colectividad apoyó a GAITAN, despejando a sí el camino hacia la presidencia del conservador MARIANO OSPINA PEREZ. En el gobierno de Ospina tuvo lugar la más sangrienta persecución al liberalismo y ocurrió el asesinato de GAITAN. Iniciando así un largo período de violencia en el país, que aún no termina, pues los liberales perseguidos y clandestinizados forman luego los primeros focos armados que a la postre se convirtieron en las FARC.

Hoy que Colombia vive la primavera de un nuevo gobierno, las fuerzas progresistas luchan entre sí, sin priorizar la unidad que es la única que nos puede llevar a cimentar verdaderamente un gobierno popular y progresista.
El Huila no es ajeno a estas circunstancias. Aquí todos los esfuerzos se encaminan, y con grandes dificultades, a buscar una candidatura única a la gobernación, mientras los partidos de la derecha andan con mucha diligencia y con mucho dibero, preparado sus candidaturas a la Asamblea, concejos y alcaldías.

Quiero recordarle a nuestros precandidatos que el avance de esta primavera radica en desprenderse de sus de esos egos y pensar en el futuro de esta Patria azotada y adolorida por la violencia auspiciada por los poderosos señores de la tierra. Violencia que raya 70 años.
