Hoy la democracia enfrenta serios retos de diferente índole. Uno de ellos es la creciente banalización del ejercicio político. El auge de las redes sociales y el populismo ha hecho que los políticos hoy tiendan a hablar a la ligera, guiados por la lógica de la inmediatez. Se pronuncian instantáneamente sobre cualquier tipo de tema sin detenerse a pensar de manera sosegada o sin haber meditado, consultado, evaluado, o sin considerar diversas alternativas o el impacto de lo que van a decir en el largo plazo; en muchos casos, incluso, sin verificar la autenticidad o la validez de las fuentes. Hablan con base en la primera reacción instintiva, espontánea, animal; a veces sin mostrar empatía y tacto. El único criterio que tienen en cuenta es simplemente el impacto mediático.
En su más reciente libro Salvajes de una nueva época, el antropólogo Carlos Granés sostiene que andamos “tratando de entender una nueva lógica de comunicación en la que todos participamos en caliente, al instante, en función de la simpatía o el odio que inspire el interlocutor”. Para Granés esto ha resultado en una violencia en el debate público que no se veía desde los años treinta; la visceralidad del entorno virtual ha revivido con enorme fuerza los extremismos cuyo poder seductor por más de sesenta años se intentó desactivar. A él le parece “alarmante comprobar que, cada vez con más frecuencia, la sensatez y las posturas moderadas resultan dudosas como táctica para ganar unas elecciones”.
Pareciera que el objetivo es alimentar la permanente necesidad de distracción y de consumo de contenido por parte de enjambres de seguidores, entretener a sus huestes, exacerbando las pasiones más primarias del ser humano, alimentando el fanatismo, los dogmatismos y el desprecio de los que piensan diferentes. Se enfocan en mover las pasiones primarias y amplificar la efusividad de sus barras bravas. El debate de las ideas ha dado paso a lo estrambótico, a la reacción irreflexiva, a las frases meramente efectistas destinadas a complacer a unos simpatizantes eufóricos que ven a todo el que piense diferente como un enemigo o un idiota. La sensatez ha dado paso a la idiotez.
Según Granés, el radical deslenguado que dice lo que le sale de las tripas sin pensar en las consecuencias ya no solo está en las redes sociales, sino que aparece en los escenarios de televisión y los mítines políticos. Nos encontramos ante “una política cada vez más estetizada y una nueva estirpe de aspirantes al poder dispuestos a utilizar el desplante y la incorrección como efectiva estrategia publicitaria”. El antropólogo afirma también que “los radicales han empezado a participar en la contienda electoral con fórmulas salvajes, incorrectas, escandalosas, adaptadas de los realities, de las redes sociales e incluso inspiradas en los sabotajes de la vanguardia artística”.
Muchos políticos responden, en gran medida, a las demandas de los consumidores de la “generación del ahora” que exigen todo en el momento, como dice el experto en marketing Philip Kotler. Difícilmente pueden ser buenos administrando una empresa pública, una ciudad o un país porque, contrario a lo que recomienda el gurú Peter Drucker, no trabajan por alcanzar una comprensión conceptual profunda y los deslumbra la velocidad, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que los cambios que están impulsando las nuevas tecnologías son tan complicados de entender por parte de los políticos, como lo señala Yuval Noah Harari en 21 lecciones para el siglo XXI.
Es cierto que las redes sociales tienen aspectos positivos como, por ejemplo, acercar a los ciudadanos a sus representantes políticos y permitir hacer campañas menos costosas a los que no quieren depender del clientelismo. Pero también es cierto que varias redes sociales son productos diseñados intencionalmente para crear hábitos compulsivos que logren mantener conectados a los usuarios la mayor parte del tiempo. Para lograr eso le dan prioridad a las noticias o declaraciones que alimentan el morbo, el odio, el miedo, la indignación, es decir, emociones fuertes y viscerales. Ahora todos somos “fabricantes de espectáculo”.
Este progresivo cambio en la forma de hacer política se da en un nuevo contexto cultural que Vargas Llosa define en su libro La civilización del espectáculo como “la de un mundo donde el primer lugar en la tabla de valores vigente lo ocupa el entretenimiento, y donde divertirse, escapar del aburrimiento, es la pasión universal” y afirma el escritor peruano que “convertir esa natural propensión a pasarlo bien en un valor supremo tiene consecuencias inesperadas: la banalización de la cultura, la generalización de la frivolidad y, en el campo de la información, que prolifere el periodismo irresponsable de la chismografía y el escándalo”. Este ambiente también ha fomentado la banalización de la política.
Según el nobel, la publicidad y las apariencias han ido reemplazando las ideas y los ideales, así como el debate intelectual y los programas en la política. Como consecuencia, la popularidad y el éxito se conquistan por la simple demagogia y el talento histriónico en vez de la inteligencia y la probidad. Vargas Llosa, de igual forma, arguye que “la cultura esnob y pasota adormece cívica y moralmente a una sociedad que, de este modo, se vuelve cada vez mas indulgente hacia los extravíos y excesos de quienes ocupan cargos públicos y ejercen cualquier tipo de poder”.
En contraste, a lo largo de la historia, desde diversas culturas y filosofías se ha elogiado virtudes como la sabiduría, la prudencia, la templanza, el dominio de las reacciones instintivas, el arte de escuchar, la capacidad de emitir juicios sosegados y equilibraros. La misma sabiduría popular enseña que es importante no responder en estado de irritación y rabia, sino que es mejor esperar a calmarse y tomar aire antes de responder.
Sin embargo, en la civilización del espectáculo estos valores pareciera que van perdiendo vigencia y estima. Como resultado de esta tendencia, cada vez se alimentan más los falsos dilemas o dicotomías: se tiende a pensar equivocadamente que sólo hay dos opciones ubicadas en los extremos, y el que cuestione a uno (o no lo apoye) es porque está de acuerdo con el otro, es decir se ve la realidad a blanco y negro; nos hemos vuelto casi incapaces de ver sus matices y las múltiples posibilidades de solución asociadas a los problemas sociales (complejos, cambiantes, interdependientes y condicionados por naturaleza).
La política, en todo caso, siempre ha sido de emociones, de pasiones o, en otras palabras, en ella siempre ha prevalecido el pathos sobre el logos y el ethos. No podemos ignorar que la política desciende del rito y no del silogismo, como lo ha escrito Jesús Silva-Herzog. Ahora, sin embargo, las redes sociales y la cultura de masas han permitido una exacerbación de esas emociones, borrando casi por completo la disposición a deliberar y el debate respetuoso basado en argumentos. La novedad, según Granés, es que ahora la política radical empieza a ser uno de los espectáculos predilectos, en el que participamos todos. “Comentando el espectáculo lo agrandamos, lo inflamos, lo difundimos. De manera que no solo consumidores, también productores”
Cass Sustein señala en su libro #Republic: Divided democracy in the age of social media que el sistema de libre expresión además de evitar la censura, debe asegurar que la gente esté expuesta a diferentes perspectivas, muchas veces opuestas. No obstante, las redes sociales tiendes a crear silos o cámaras de eco en donde uno tiende a leer o ver las posiciones políticas o ideológicas con las que uno se identifica y a no leer (“eliminar”) a los que piensan diferente, acentuando los radicalismos y los dogmatismos políticos e ideológicos. Para los miembros de una democracia, según Sustein, no es positivo que sean incapaces de apreciar las visiones de sus conciudadanos o si se ven como enemigos o adversarios en una especie de guerra y resulta riesgoso que la exposición exclusiva a opiniones de personas que piensan similar alimente la excesiva confianza, el extremismo, el desprecio hacia otros y, algunas veces, incluso violencia.
En fin, estamos en un escenario donde la banalización de la política nutre los populismos, los fanatismos ideológicos, los radicalismos políticos y la precarización del discurso público. Por tanto, hoy se tiende a valorar menos las ideas diferentes que pueden ofrecer nuevas perspectivas y enriquecer la comprensión de la realidad y los problemas sociales, económicos y ambientales que debe afrontar nuestra civilización.
