El Cerro Páramo de Miraflores, el escenario natural más importantes del Huila, según la CAM, cumple 12 años como Parque Regional “Rigoberto Urriago”, extendido sobre 31.647,63 hectáreas de área protegida en Algeciras, Gigante y Garzón, en el centro oriente del Departamento.
La cantidad de servicios ecosistémicos que brinda, permitió que por primera vez en su historia tuviera una expedición científica, que duró 24 días con la participación 25 expedicionarios, gracias al trabajo articulado del Grupo de Investigación Biodiversidad de Alta Montaña de la Universidad Distrital de Bogotá, la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Alto Magdalena-CAM, y la comunidad de la zona.
La expedición tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la biodiversidad del Cerro Páramo, identificando fauna, flora, analizando la diversidad, las especies promisorias e identificando otras con importancia para la conservación.
La expedición destaca la obtención de 526 registros de fauna y 816 flora, dentro de los que hay 114 especies de fauna (Anfibios: 33, Aves: 61, Mamíferos: 20) y 63 géneros de plantas.
Muchas de las especies presentes en Miraflores aportan nuevas distribuciones antes desconocidas para la ciencia, así mismo cabe la posibilidad de encontrarse frente a casos de nuevas especies, lo cual todavía es objeto de estudio.
Para Abelardo Rodríguez Bolaños, director de la expedición y docente de la Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, el Cerro Páramo de Miraflores es una joya nacional, con un estado de conservación altísimo en las partes más altas, en el área de páramo y en el bosque andino y subandino.
