En estos días, cuando se conmemora el Día del Periodista, la pregunta surge de nuevo. ¿Para qué el periodismo?

No es fácil aventurar una respuesta. Y habrá tantas como periodistas a quienes se les formule. El periodismo no es una ciencia exacta, por lo que cualquier intento de explicación podría ajustarse. Y sin embargo, pese a las múltiples posibilidades o también a la imposibilidad de una única y certera respuesta, podríamos aventurar unas respuestas.

El periodismo, como muchas otras disciplinas sociales, vive su crisis. Pero esta no hay que mirarla desde el punto de vista negativo, sino como un punto de quiebre, de inflexión. Los avances tecnológicos y la irrupción de redes sociales hacen parte de la realidad de la mayoría de habitantes del mundo, y han incidido, por supuesto, en su ejercicio e impacto.

La inmediatez que permite la tecnología y la posibilidad de que cada usuario comparta imágenes o textos le han restado al periodista el privilegio de ser el único intermediario y transmisor de contenidos de interés. No obstante, el periodismo en particular y los medios de comunicación en general no pueden competirles a las redes sociales. Tampoco deberían entrar en esa competencia. Al contrario, esa preeminencia de la inmediatez debería ser olvidada totalmente por el periodismo y este debería volver por las fuentes que lo nutrieron en sus primeros años: despreocuparse de la prontitud, de la trivialización de la información y retomar algunas responsabilidades que parece se hubieran ido perdiendo con el paso del tiempo.

Una forma de volver por sus primeras fuentes nutricias sería echar mano de un postulado básico del periodismo, como nos lo hacía caer en cuenta Gabo, quien siempre enfatizaba en que lo importante no era dar la noticia primero, sino darla de la mejor forma posible. Pero hay más:

Quizá la mayor responsabilidad sea volver a generar debate y ayudar a construir opinión pública. Mediante la entrega de una información construida desde diferentes ángulos y con voces expertas y testimonios significativos, el periodismo podría ayudar en estos tiempos de turbulencias sociales y políticas a que los ciudadanos tomen decisiones con más conocimiento de causa, con base en antecedentes de los temas en cuestión y basados en argumentos más concienzudos.

Otro interesante aporte podría ser ayudar a conocer al otro, a los otros. Decía Joseph Pulitzer que el reto del periodista es “darle voz a quien no tiene voz”: negros, mujeres, campesinos, desplazados, obreros, analfabetas, pobres, etc. Muchos grupos poblacionales “periféricos” históricamente no han hecho parte de los relatos y recuentos oficiales y aparecen muchas veces como cifras frías, parte de estadísticas. Muchas veces sus dinámicas sociales, culturales, sus ritos, sus músicas, sus problemas y potencialidades han sido ignorados. Desvelarlos, darlos a conocer sin caricaturizarlos ni conmiserarlos, sino dándoles dignidad en sus singularidades y formas de ver el mundo, pueda quizá ayudar a reconocer que no estamos solos ni somos únicos; somos parte de un mundo pluricultural, donde “los de abajo” también cuentan y pueden ser contados. Tener esto entre nuestras prioridades como periodistas ayudará a entendernos como sociedad y reconocernos en nuestras diferencias.

También, una gran ayuda en estos tiempos de globalización cultural sea contribuir a re-conocernos. Gracias a los medios de comunicación, a las redes sociales, nos invaden imágenes y textos de otros lugares, y por creernos o sentirnos quizá más universales terminamos aceptando que lo mejor está allá y olvidamos nuestras potencialidades, nuestros gustos, costumbres, y cambiamos nuestra comida, nuestros ritos, la idiosincrasia, para sentirnos, supuestamente, más ciudadanos del mundo. No se trata de volvernos chauvinistas, pero el periodismo desde sus narrativas podría mostrar que también lo propio, lo autóctono, puede ser tan valorado y tan importante como lo que está allende fronteras regionales y nacionales. El periodismo en estos tiempos de globalización puede ayudar a que nos valoremos, nos reconozcamos y tengamos más sentido de pertenencia con lo que siempre nos ha hecho, y en tal sentido nos involucremos con los desafíos de nuestra nación, de nuestros pueblos.

Y una decidida apuesta que debería tener en esta época de odebrechts, de reficares y de caprecoms sería volver por sus años de denuncia. El periodismo tiene que volver a tornarse en un contrapoder; un oficio incómodo para quienes rigen los destinos de la economía, la religión, la justicia, la política… El periodismo debería evocar a los muckrakers que a principios del siglo XX desvelaron prácticas non sanctas con los recursos públicos; contra el medio ambiente, la evasión de impuestos, entre otros, y pusieron contra las cuerdas a quienes los cometieron. El periodismo debe ser un poder alterno que se olvida de tratos con los otros poderosos, como lo propuso desde finales del siglo XIX el reportero del NYT John Swinton, quien invitó a sus colegas a “desmarcarse” de las palmadas en la espalda y salir de los clubes sociales:

“Menuda estupidez es esta de brindar aquí ¡por una prensa independiente! Somos las herramientas y los lacayos de los ricos, que permanecen entre bastidores. Somos sus marionetas. Ellos mueven los hilos y nosotros bailamos”.

En fin, no son fáciles los tiempos, pero no todo está perdido. A veces es bueno mirar atrás no con afán nostálgico, sino como una forma de aprender de los errores, de retomar aciertos. Se vale para la vida. Se vale para el periodismo, por supuesto: tanto por aprender. Aún estamos a tiempo
