Los colombianos celebramos el 20 de julio de cada año como el día de nuestra Independencia de España con fundamento en los sucesos ocurridos en Santafé en 1810; esa es la historia oficial, sin embargo, en la mayoría de las Juntas que se impusieron en las ciudades y capitales virreinales de América, no se declaró tal independencia, por el contrario, las oligarquías criollas asumieron el poder político en nombre de Fernando VII y a la espera de su retorno.
En el caso de la Junta de Santa Fe, el propósito de los notables que formaron parte de dicha Junta queda evidenciado en la nota que ellos enviaron a las provincias invitándoles a sumarse que: “Nuestros votos, nuestro juramento son “la defensa y la conservación de nuestra santa religión católica: la obediencia a nuestro legítimo soberano el señor Fernando VII, y el sostenimiento de nuestros derechos hasta derramar la última gota de sangre por tan sagrados objetivos.

Tan justos principios no dejarán de reunirnos las ilustres provincias del reino.
Ellas no tienen otros sentimientos, según lo han manifestado, ni conviene a la común utilidad que militemos bajo otras banderas, o sea otra nuestra divisa que “religión, patria, rey”” (29 de julio de 1810).
Lo que tuvieron de revolucionario aquellos sucesos fue que las Juntas en muchos lugares se impusieron gracias a la movilización del pueblo, que le quitó el poder a las autoridades virreinales el que quedó en manos de quienes controlaban los Cabildos, es decir, la oligarquía criolla principal beneficiaria del modelo económico colonial, aunque desprovista, hasta ese momento, del poder político.
La Oligarquía Criolla veía con preocupación la influencia francesa que promulgaba la libertad, igualdad, derechos humanos, derecho a la tierra entre otras reivindicaciones populares, principios que atentaban contra el poder económico que ya usufructuaban, por eso no propugnaban una independencia de España cuyo modelo económico colonial les favorecía, sino una independencia política del régimen francés hasta la restitución del monarca Español Fernando VII.

El verdadero grito de Independencia de España se dio el 6 de agosto de 1810, los momposinos, siguiendo el ejemplo de Cali, del Socorro, de Santa Fe y otras ciudades eligieron su Junta de Gobierno; pero, a diferencia de las demás que reconocieron a Fernando VII, Mompox rompió totalmente sus vínculos con España, posteriormente declaran su independencia absoluta Cartagena de Indias, el 11 de noviembre de 1811,Cundinamarca solo lo hizo el 16 de julio de 1813, la provincia de Neiva lo hizo el 8 de febrero de 1814
De esta forma, podemos concluir que el 20 de julio de 1810 ni siquiera existía una general y plena convicción sobre las pretensiones independentistas; tan solo estaba el deseo de que a los españoles nacidos en América se les reconociera su derecho a reasumir el poder en ausencia del rey cautivo.
