La sociedad civil sur huilense, organizó crucial batalla para enfrentar, con todo el poderío a su alcance, la arremetida que contra el ‘fósiles viviente’ Zamia, acometen desinformados civiles, que la comercializan como exótica.
La especie milenaria, con linaje ancestral dentro de las plantas con semilla, en su mayoría dieta de los dinosaurios, cuya variedad Zamia Huilensis, fue descubierta por el biólogo Jorge Luis Peña, en esta región colombiana, en el 2012, se está convirtiendo en especie endémica.
Hay 340 especies de Zamias en el planeta, 21 están en Colombia y una de ellas es La Zamia Huilensis, precisa la Sociedad Colombiana de Cycadas.
El alto grado de amenaza, a la especie a nivel mundial, porque la mayoría de cycadales están en riesgo de extinción tanto por la destrucción y degradación de su hábitat, como por la sobreexplotación para uso como plantas ornamentales, impulsó a un grupo de instituciones y de personas de la sociedad civil a unirse para generar acciones concretas en torno al cuidado y la conservación de la especie.
INFORME
Un informe oficial entregado por la autoridad regional ambiental, con sede en Pitalito, revela:
“Como parte de una primera iniciativa de conservación, la Sociedad Colombiana de Cycadas, la Corporación Autónoma del Alto Magdalena-CAM, Reserva Natural Pompeya y la Alcaldía de Pitalito, realizaron el taller sobre estrategias para la conservación de la zamia en Colombia. El evento que se realizó en la finca Marengo, sede de la Dirección Territorial Sur de la CAM, contó con la participación de profesionales en temas ambientales y campesinos interesados en cuidar la especie.
“Nuestra idea es empezar a implementar acciones de conservación de la zamia, como especie carismática para la conservación de toda la biodiversidad de la región. Nos interesa mucho la zamia huilensis, pues, al ser una planta endémica de esta zona del país, está corriendo mucho riesgo y si se extingue acá, pues se extingue en el planeta”, señaló Cristina López Gallego, presidenta de la Sociedad Colombiana de Cycadas.
De acuerdo con la especialista, a nivel nacional es urgente que se realicen acciones conjuntas que garanticen la conservación de la zamia, especialmente en la región andina, donde más se reporta riesgo de extinción, tal como se envidencia en la Lista roja de especies amenazadas de la UICN.
ZAMIA HUILENSIS
Dentro de la actividades establecidas en el conversatorio, está la de realizar monitoreo continuo a los cicadales contenidos en los bosques de los parques naturales regionales Corredor Biológico Guácharos-Puracé y Serranía de Peñas Blancas, así como en la Reserva Natural Pompeya en el municipio de Pitalito, donde hace presencia la zamia huilensis, descubierta en el año 2012 por el biólogo Jorge Luis Peña, convirtiéndose en uno de los más reciente reportes de nueva especie de zamia a nivel nacional.
“Desde la reserva Pompeya, siempre hemos estado abiertos a la investigación, y esto nos permitió establecer que dentro del área natural tenemos una población de zamia única en el mundo”, sostuvo Fernando Castro Polania, director de la Reserva Pompeya.Como parte del proceso de concientización sobre la importancia de las cycadas para el planeta, dentro de la jornada académica en la que también se vincularon niños, se realizó la siembra de dos zamias: huilensis y tolimensis en el Sendero de Interpretación Ambiental del Macizo Colombiano-SENDICAM de Pitalito, donde se convertirá en una nueva estación para este importante escenario de educación ambiental.
