Dos aviones que fueron utilizados en la lucha contra los cultivos ilícitos serán acondicionados por la Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres y la Policía Nacional para labores de extinción de incendios forestales.
Las aeronaves tipo AT 802 Air Tractor, hacen parte de una flota de nueve aviones que fueron donados por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos a la Policía Nacional de Colombia.
La máxima altura que pueden alcanzar estos aviones es de 5400 metros, mientras que la elevación base o mínima, es de 150 metros sobre el área de conflagración, lo que los convierte en aparatos versátiles y seguros para la extinción de incendios forestales.
El contenedor para el agente extintor tiene una capacidad de 800 galones que pueden ser descargados desde la nave a través de un sistema de compuertas que será adaptado en dichos aviones por parte de la UNGRD durante los próximos meses, para que puedan entrar en pleno funcionamiento.
Los dos aviones de la Policía Nacional, que entrarán al servicio del SNGRD, tienen una autonomía de 10 horas de vuelo que les permitirá llegar a cualquier lugar del país en que se presente esta clase de conflagraciones y cargar el agente retardante en el aeropuerto más cercano al lugar del incendio.
La ceremonia de entrega de los aviones, que fue realizada en la sede del Área de Aviación de la Policía Nacional en Guaymaral, Cundinamarca, contó con la presencia del Ministro de Defensa Nacional Luis Carlos Villegas, el Director de la UNGRD, Carlos Iván Márquez Pérez, el general Jorge Hernando Nieto, director de la Policía Nacional y Kevin Whitaker, embajador de los Estados Unidos en Colombia
