Durante una presentación en San Francisco de varios productos nuevos que poseen la inteligencia «Assistant», Google logró que el público se refiriera a sus flamantes auriculares Pixel Buds como una versión moderna del «Babel Fish», aquel pez alienígena que oficiaba de traductor en las novelas de ciencia ficción «The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxia» (Guía del autoestopista galáctico).
En la literatura, la inserción de un pez Babel en un oído permitía a una persona entender cualquier idioma hablado. Los Pixel Buds, sincronizados con los recién presentados teléfonos inteligentes Pixel de segunda generación, prometen traducciones en tiempo real de conversaciones en 40 idiomas.
