Inventar la primera aplicación del mundo aprobada como método anticonceptivo empezó solo como un pasatiempo para Elina Berglund Scherwitzl.
La física nuclear, que había estado trabajando con el equipo del CERN que descubrió el bosón de Higgs en 2012, se cansó de usar métodos anticonceptivos hormonales, pero no quería tener hijos.
Así que decidió utilizar su experiencia en el manejo de datos para buscar una alternativa.
«Igual que muchas mujeres desde mi adolescencia probé muchos métodos diferentes de anticonceptivos pero no encontré ninguna solución que encajara conmigo», le dijo a la BBC.
«En esa búsqueda de un método alternativo natural y eficaz descubrí que uno puede saber cuándo es fértil por la temperatura, y para mí eso fue una verdadera revelación«, agregó.
Utilizando un complejo análisis matemático y de datos Berglund Scherwitzl empezó a desarrollar un algoritmo diseñado para ser tan preciso que puede identificar exactamente cuándo una mujer ovula dentro de su ciclo menstrual.
Esto le permitió generar un esquema de los días en que necesitaría usar protección, con un nivel de certeza mucho mayor que otros métodos similares de planificación familiar basados en el «ritmo» natural del ciclo.
300.000 usuarias en 3 años
Se puso tan contenta con los resultados que junto a su marido austriaco, el también físico Raoul Scherwitzl, empezó a buscar financiación para desarrollar su producto, que llamó Natural Cycles.
Lo ofreció como una aplicación que analiza al detalle series de datos sobre la temperatura y las tendencias del ciclo de cada mujer, para ayudarlas en sus necesidades relacionadas con la fertilidad y la prevención del embarazo.
La aplicación fue lanzada en 2014 y hoy tiene unas 300.000 usuarias que pagan una cantidad mensual o anual por el servicio.
En Reino Unido una suscripción de un año cuesta unos US$65, que incluye un termómetro.
La compañía atrajo inicialmente una inversión de US$8 millones y hasta ahora ha generado ventas por valor de 6.
Una coincidencia que lo hizo posible
Si no hubiera sido por la coincidencia con un gran descubrimiento científico, sin embargo, quizás su proyecto no habría tenido un despegue tan rápido.
Berglund Scherwitzl, quien creció en Malmo, en el sur de Suecia, trabajó en el CERN (siglas en francés de la Organización Europea para la Investigación Nuclear, con sede en Ginebra).
Y en 2012 tras décadas de investigación, el equipo del que formaba parte finalmente descubrió bosón de Higgs, apodado también como «partícula de dios», crucial para el entendimiento de los expertos sobre cómo se formó el universo.
«Mucho tiene que ver con la coincidencia y el momento. Nos acabábamos de casar. El experimento se estaba cerrando durante un par de años y yo pensaba ‘si quisiera hacer algo fuera de la física ahora es el momento'», explicó la investigadora sueca.
«Mi marido siempre había querido hacerse emprendedor así que él sugirió «Ok, dejemos la física y convirtamos un algoritmo en una aplicación«, relató.
«Tan ingenua»
Después de varias pruebas clínicasen febrero de 2017 su app se convirtió en el primer aparato del mundo con una base tecnológica que obtiene una certificación formal para su uso como anticonceptivo.
Consiguió la aprobación para su uso en la Unión Europea tras una inspección alemana y de la organización de certificados Tuv Sud.
Sin embargo, la pareja recuerda el proceso para obtener ese permiso europeo como un camino de muchos altibajos.
La aprobación inicial por parte de la Agencia Sueca para los Productos Médicos fue revocada en 2015, tras cierta polémica en los medios de comunicación, que sugerían que la aplicación promovía comportamientos arriesgados entre las jóvenes suecas.
Le prohibieron a la compañía hacer publicidad durante 18 meses y eso resultó en «un gran obstáculo» para el crecimiento de la empresa.
«Como venía de una perspectiva científica, pensé que si creaba un producto que fuera realmente bueno se vendería y todo el mundo confiaría en él. Pero me di cuenta de que eso no es así en absoluto», admitió.
«Pero quizás fue bueno que fuera tan ingenua, porque si hubiera sabido todos los desafíos que me esperaban quizás no me habría atrevido a hacerlo».
«Tan eficaz como la píldora»
Ahora la empresa promueve el producto como un método «tan eficaz como la píldora«.
Eso, después de un gran estudio sobre métodos anticonceptivos en el que participaron más de 4.000 mujeres, cuyos resultados fueron publicados en la revista especializada European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care, cuyas investigaciones son revisadas por otros expertos antes de su publicación.
Los investigadores, entre los que se encontraba la pareja cofundadora, encontraron que el 7% de las mujeres que usaron la aplicación de una manera «típica» (es decir, permitiendo cierto nivel de error humano) se quedaron embarazadas, comparado con el 9% que tomaron la píldora y menos del 1% que usaron dispositivos intrauterinos (DIU).
Frente a estos resultados, la física acepta que la eficacia de su producto depende de que las usuarias se adhieran al detalle a las instrucciones de la aplicación, y por tanto puede que no sea una buena alternativa para todas las mujeres.
Además, tampoco las protege de enfermedades de transmisión sexual.
«Igual que con la píldora, hace falta cierto esfuerzo diario por parte de la usuaria. Pero realmente nosotros esperamos ser la alternativa por defecto si no quieres usar métodos anticonceptivos hormonales ni un implante intrauterino».
Aunque por ahora el producto solo tiene certificación europea, está disponible para todo el mundo.
La mayoría de las usuarias se concentran en Reino Unido y los países nórdicos, y a pesar de la controversia inicial la aplicación ha sido utilizada desde 160 países.
Según Berglund Scherwitzl las ventas globales se dispararon desde que la Unión Europea confirmó su certificación en febrero de este año, así que los ingresos de este año ya duplicaron a los del año pasado de US$2 millones.
Además de aumentar el número de suscriptoras que quieren evitar el embarazo la compañía también está tratando de atraer clientes que quieren utilizar la aplicación para lo contrario, saber cuál es el mejor momento para concebir.
Una pareja visionaria
Ahora marido y mujer siguen levantando la empresa, que tiene 30 trabajadores con sede en Estocolmo, mientras crían a un niño. Su proyecto en familia les ha permitido pasar mucho tiempo juntos.
«Es nuestra pasión y nuestro pasatiempo. Por las noches cuando vamos a casa y tomamos una copa de vino hablamos de nuestros objetivos y nos ponemos un poco más visionarios de lo que nos permite la rutina de la jornada laboral», cuenta Berglund Scherwitzl.
Esa visión incluye diseminar información sobre cómo se puede usar la tecnología para lidiar con temas relacionados con la salud de la mujer, algo que que según la física sueca «ha sido en general ignorado porque los investigadores con frecuencia son hombres».
La pareja también espera aumentar el número de usuarias en países en desarrollo donde la religión es una barrera para el uso de métodos anticonceptivos.
«Hemos llegado ya más lejos de lo que yo inicialmente había pensado, y eso te da una sensación increíble. Pero yo siento que no deberíamos quedarnos aquí», dice.
«Ahora es realmente el momento de crecer y de llegar a todas estas mujeres en el mundo… todo embarazo debería traer felicidad«.
