Después de una Guerra de 50 años, es tarde para los tribunales.
Si hubo una guerra, todos delinquieron, todos cometieron crímenes, todos profanaron la condición humana, todos se envilecieron. Y la sombra de esa profanación y de esa vileza cae sobre la sociedad entera, por acción, por omisión, por haber visto, por haber callado, por haber cerrado los oídos, por haber cerrado los ojos.
Si para poder perdonar tienen que hacer la lista de los crímenes, hagan la lista de los crímenes. Pero esas listas sólo sirven si son completas, y quién sabe qué ángel podrá lograr el listado exhaustivo.
Ya comete un error el que trata de convertir en héroes a unos y en villanos a los otros. Lo que hace que una guerra sea una guerra es que ha pasado del nivel del crimen al de una inmensa tragedia colectiva, y en ella puede haber héroes en todos los bandos, canallas en todos los bandos, en todos los bandos cosas que no merecen perdón.
Y ahí sí estoy con Cristo: hasta las cosas más imperdonables tienen que ser perdonadas, a cambio de que la guerra de verdad se termine, y no sólo en los campos, los barrios y las cárceles, sino en las noticias, en los hogares y en los corazones.
Pero qué difícil es pasar la página de una guerra: la ciudadanía mira en una dirección, y ve crímenes, mira en sentido contrario, y ve crímenes.
Es verdad. La guerra ha durado 50 años: de asaltos, de emboscadas, de bombardeos, de extorsiones, de secuestros, de destierros, de tomas de pueblos, de tomas de cuarteles, de operaciones de tierra arrasada, de tomas de rehenes, de masacres, de estrategias de terror, de cárceles, de ejecuciones, de torturas, de asesinatos voluntarios, de asesinatos involuntarios, de minas, de orfandades, de infancias malogradas, de bajas colaterales, de balas perdidas. Medio siglo de crímenes a los que nos toca llamar la guerra.
Pero cuando las guerras no terminan con el triunfo de un bando y la derrota de otro, cuando las guerras terminan por un acuerdo de buena voluntad de las partes, no se puede pretender montar un tribunal que administre justicia sobre la interminable lista de horrores y de crímenes que, hilo tras hilo, tejieron la historia.
Lo que hay que hacer con las guerras es pasar la página, y eso no significa olvidar, sino todo lo contrario: elaborar el recuerdo, reconciliarse con la memoria. Como en el hermoso poema “Después de la guerra”, de Robert Graves, cuando uno sabe que la guerra ha terminado, ya puede mostrar con honor las cicatrices. Y hasta abrazar al adversario.
Y todos debemos pedir reparación.
Hay una teoría de las víctimas, pero en una guerra de 50 años ¿habrá quién no haya sido víctima? Basta profundizar un poco en sus vidas, y lo más probable es que hasta los victimarios lo hayan sido, como en esas historias de la violencia de los años 50, donde bastaba retroceder hasta la infancia de los monstruos para encontrar unos niños espantados.
También eso son las guerras largas: cadenas y cadenas de ofendidos. Por eso es preciso hablar del principal victimario: no los guerrilleros, ni los paramilitares, ni los soldados, colombianos todos, muchachos de la misma edad y los mismos orígenes, hijos de la misma desdicha y víctimas del mismo enemigo.
Un orden inicuo, de injusticia, de menosprecio, de arrogancia, que aquí no sólo acaba con las gentes: ha matado los bosques, los ríos, la fauna silvestre, la inocencia, los manantiales.
Un orden absurdo, excluyente, mezquino, que hemos tolerado entre todos, y del que todos somos responsables. Aunque hay que añadir lo que se sabe: que todos somos iguales, pero hay unos más iguales que otros.
Enumeren los crímenes, pero eso no pondrá fin al conflicto. La guerra, más que un crimen, es una gran tragedia. Y más importante y urgente que castigar sus atrocidades es corregir sus causas, unas causas tan hondas que ya las señaló Gaitán hace 80 años.
Por eso se equivoca el procurador pidiendo castigo sólo para unos, y se equivocan los elocuentes vengadores, señalando sólo un culpable, y se equivoca el expresidente que sólo señala las malas acciones de los otros, y se equivoca el presidente, que habla como si, precisamente él, fuera el único inocente.
Señores: aquí hubo una guerra. Y aún no ha terminado.
Y no la resolverán las denuncias, ni los tribunales, ni las cárceles, sino la corrección de este orden inicuo, donde ya se sabe quién nació para ser mendigo y quién para ser presidente.
Si, como tantos creemos, es la falta de democracia lo que ha producido esta guerra, sólo la democracia puede ponerle fin.
Al final de las guerras, cuando estas se resuelven por el diálogo, hay un momento en que se alza el coro de los vengadores que rechaza el perdón, que reclama justicia. Pero los dioses de la justicia tenían que estar al comienzo para impedir la guerra. Cuando aparecen al final, solo llegan para impedir la paz.
