El exmandatario ha sido imputado este jueves por un gran jurado en Nueva York tras ser investigado por elpago de US$130.000 durante la campaña presidencial de 2016 para presuntamente silenciar a Stormy Daniels, una actriz pornográfica, por una supuesta relación del pasado.
Daniels asegura que mantuvo una relación con Trump cuando este estaba casado y que le pagaron para que no contara nada. El pago en sí mismo no sería ilegal, pero al parecer Trump lo registró como un gasto de sus negocios. En Nueva York falsificar información relativa a los negocios es ilegal.
Trump, que está siendo investigado por otros casos y que planea ser candidato para las elecciones presidenciales de 2024, niega las acusaciones y considera que es víctima de una «persecución política».
Los detalles de los cargos aún no han sido publicados, pero la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, emitió un comunicado que confirma una citación para Trump.
Y es que el magnate, que vive en Florida, deberá presentarse en Nueva York para ser arrestado formalmente y comparecer por primera vez ante el juez para la lectura de cargos.
«Esta noche nos comunicamos con el abogado del señor Trump para coordinar su entrega ante la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Manhattan para la lectura de cargos, en una acusación de la Corte Suprema que permanece confidencial. Se brindará información cuando se decida la fecha de la lectura de cargos», reza el comunicado.
Se espera que eso suceda la próxima semana, según un reporte de la cadena CBS, que cita a los abogados de Trump.
Es posible que a Trump se le tomen las huellas dactilares y se le saque la tradicional foto policial, como ocurre con todos los imputados por cargos criminales.
«No cometió ningún delito. Lucharemos con todas nuestras fuerzas en los tribunales«, adelantó su abogada Susan Necheles en un comunicado.
Trump es hoy por hoy el claro favorito para ser el candidato del Partido Republicano a la presidencia en las elecciones de 2024, por lo que se prevé que su imputación y próxima lectura de cargos sacuda el panorama político.
No hay ninguna disposición en la legislación estadounidense que impida que —de llegar a ese punto— un candidato declarado culpable de un delito aspire a la presidencia o incluso ejerza el cargo desde prisión.
El expresidente también está siendo investigado por su papel en el asalto al Capitolio el 6 de enero de 2021, por su intento de evitar su derrota electoral en el estado de Georgia en las elecciones de 2020 y por su manejo de información clasificada una vez que dejó la Casa Blanca.
La reacción de Trump
El expresidente aseguró en un comunicado que la imputación supone «la mayor interferencia electoral en la historia» del país.
«Lo que han hecho los demócratas es impensable: imputar a una persona completamente inocente en un acto de patente interferencia electoral. Nunca antes en la historia de nuestro país había sucedido algo similar», se lee en un comunicado difundido nada más conocerse la noticia.
También arremete contra el fiscal Bragg, acusándolo de estar «haciendo el trabajo sucio de Joe Biden», en referencia al actual presidente, que ganó a Trump en las elecciones de 2020 y podría ser de nuevo su rival en 2024.
«Están tratando de influir en la elección. Es un ataque a nuestro país», le dijo por teléfono a la cadena ABC News.
En Twitter, el abogado de Stormy Daniel, Clark Brewster, dijo que la acusación contra el expresidente no debe ser «motivo de alegría».
«Se debe respetar el arduo trabajo y la conciencia del gran jurado», señaló. «Ahora que prevalezca la verdad y la justicia. Nadie está por encima de la ley».

Es cierto que otro exmandatario fue ya arrestado, pero ocurrió en 1872, por exceso de velocidad al conducir su carruaje, y evitó ser acusado.
En cierta forma, no es noticia que un exjefe de Estado sea imputado y que incluso acabe en prisión. Ha ocurrido en todo el mundo a lo largo de la historia: cientos de presidentes, primeros ministros y líderes militares han sido expulsados de los palacios de gobierno y enviados directamente a la cárcel.
Pero Estados Unidos se considera a sí misma excepcional, y a Washington, su capital situada en una colina, un faro moral y democrático para el mundo.
Así que unirse a este particular club no es solo el problema de Trump. Es un golpe a la autoestima de EE.UU. y a la confianza en sí misma.
Y son golpes graves.
Ya fuimos testigos de un violento ataque a la sede misma de la democracia el 6 de enero de 2021. Vimos a los miembros de ambas cámaras del Congreso correr por sus vidas y a la turba arrasando el Capitolio durante horas sin que fuera detenida.

También líderes demócratas y respublicanos reaccionaron ante la decisión del gran jurado.
Kevin McCarthy, el presidente republicano de la Cámara de Representantes, acusó al fiscal Bragg de dañar al país: «Mientras libera habitualmente a criminales violentos que aterrorizan al público, utilizó nuestro sagrado sistema de justicia como arma contra el presidente Donald Trump».
«El pueblo estadounidense no tolerará esta injusticia, y la Cámara de Representantes pedirá cuentas a Alvin Bragg y su abuso de poder sin precedentes», escribió en Twitter.

Daniels habló por primera vez en 2011 de la supuesta relación que mantuvo con Trump. Lo hizo en una entrevista con la revista In Touch Weekly que no se publicó en ese momento.
Afirmó que conoció a Trump en un torneo de golf en julio de 2006 y que tuvieron relaciones sexuales en una ocasión en un hotel en la zona del lago Tahoe, un área turística de California.
«Él no parecía preocupado por eso. Era un poco arrogante», dijo en respuesta a la pregunta del entrevistador sobre si Trump le había dicho que no dijera nada sobre la noche que supuestamente pasaron juntos.
