A esa sesión fueron citados los ministros del Interior, Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez, y de Defensa, Guillermo Botero; el comandante del Ejército Nacional, general Nicacio de Jesús Martínez; el director de la Policía Nacional, general Oscar Atehortúa Duque, y al director de la Unidad Nacional de Protección, Pablo Elías González Monguí, quienes se referirán al delicado ambiente que viene afectando el desarrollo de las campañas electorales, con miras a las elecciones del próximo 27 de octubre.
Los senadores citantes al debate, Juan Diego Gómez (Partido Conservador) y María del Rosario Guerra (Centro Democrático) también invitaron a esa sesión a al defensor del Pueblo Carlos Alfonso Negret; al procurador y fiscal generales de la Nación, en su orden, Fernando Carrillo Flórez y Fabio Espitia Garzón, y al presidente del Consejo Nacional Electoral, Hernán Penagos Giraldo.
Precisamente, el presidente del Senado, Lidio García Turbay (Partido Liberal) ha reiterado varias veces su invitación a los partidos y movimientos con asiento en el Congreso para que participen activamente y fijen a través de sus voceros en ese debate de control político, a la vez que calificó como deplorable la situación de violencia que vienen atravesando los candidatos a gobernaciones, asambleas, alcaldías, concejos y Juntas Administradoras Locales, JAL.
El alto dignatario del Congreso afirmó que los frecuentes asesinatos y amenazas contra las personas que han postulado su nombre en las elecciones regionales y locales, tienen la democracia en vilo ya que esta no se puede sustentar en un país donde las ideas e ideologías políticas son mancilladas por la violencia hasta llegar a perder la vida por pensar diferente, a la vez que dijo que esa situación de violencia que padece el país ha cobrado la vida de siete candidatos, pertenecientes a diferentes partidos políticos.
Recordó que las elecciones realizadas el año pasado, cuando se eligió el actual Congreso de la República y al Jefe del Estado, se cumplieron en completa calma, sin violencia alguna, lo cual no ocurría desde hacía muchas décadas. La situación actual lo tiene preocupado y por ello ha señalado que no se sabe en qué momento se le salió el país de las manos al gobierno actual, por lo que ya se viene socializando el tema con el Primer Mandatario y con los ministros.
García Turbay hizo un llamado, de manera enérgica y contundente, al gobierno nacional y a la Fuerza Pública para que les brinde todas las garantías de seguridad a los más de 117.882 candidatos, para de esa manera darle solidez a nuestra democracia.
